Cañada del Buey Multi-Use Trail Project Underway
Work is underway along the ravine leading up to Bonnieview Drive for the Cañada del Buey Multi-Use Trail Improvements project in White Rock. The contractor is trimming or removing trees that will block the construction of the pathway. Trees larger than 4 inches in diameter have been cut and blocked for firewood and are being offered free of charge to the community. Any wood still remaining is stacked at the intersection of Bonnieview and Longview. Those interested must load and haul the wood at their own responsibility and risk. Valles Caldera Trust will hold its eighth annual Run the Caldera event June 8 and 9.
The event consists of a marathon, a half-marathon and a 10K run. Everyone is invited to cheer on hundreds of runners and spend a day or two at the Valles Caldera Preserve.
Valles Caldera Trust is looking for volunteers to help with both the 10K and half-marathon on June 8 and the full marathon on June 9. Many volunteers are needed for such tasks as parking, staffing the aid station, serving food and more.

Music filled Fuller Lodge May 5 as five students competed for the Deborah Beene Music Award.
First place went to Los Alamos High School senior Emily Silks who performed on the marimba. She was awarded $1,200 and is planning to attend the University of Montana in the fall, where she will major in music. Dona Crump, 60, of Knoxville died Friday May 10, 2013 at her home. Cause of death was cancer. She was born December 4, 1952 in Columbus, Ind.
Crump graduated from Los Alamos High School and received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Tennessee Tech. She was preceded in death by her Mother Betty Miller McClanahan. Dona is survived by her father Sam McClanahan, son Aaron Crump, brother Darrell McClanahan all of Knoxville and sister Robyn Comer of Columbia, Mo. She was also beloved by numerous other aunts, uncles, and other family.

Jemez Mountain Trail Runs Take Off May 25

Hundreds of athletes from across the Southwest will compete May 25 in the Jemez Mountain Trail Runs.
Runners have already filled the available spaces for the popular half-marathon for which there is now a waiting list. Spaces are still available for the 50-mile and 50K runs.
The competitive half-marathon, 50-mile and 50K runs take place along single track trails and dirt roads in the Jemez Mountains, including Pajarito Mountain and the Valles Caldera National Preserve. The JMTR 50-mile race is regarded as one of the toughest three fifty milers in the United States.
