The Los Alamos Family YMCA’s Youth Conservation Corps celebrates its biggest summer crew yet – with 38 crew members, three crew leaders and two on-the-job trainers.
The crews began June 3 taking on their first couple of project locations with enthusiasm and creative vision, with returning crews helping new members and everyone applying newly learned techniques and concepts to re-establish and rehabilitate trails that suffered damage in recent fires, YMCA staff said.

SANTA FE—A bronze statue of U.S. Army Sgt. First Class Leroy Petry was unveiled at Santa Fe City Hall’s South Lawn Monday.
The statue was crafted by Pojoaque Pueblo Governor and sculptor George Rivera in honor of the only Santa Fe native to be awarded the Medal of Honor—our nation’s highest award for military valor bestowed upon an individual serving in the United States Armed Forces. The award is presented by the President of the United States in the name of Congress.

Arbitrator Finds in Favor of Los Alamos County in Firefighter Dispute

An arbitrator has determined that Los Alamos County acted within its rights in terminating a firefighter who lost his security clearance at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Edwin Render delivered his opinion recently following a February hearing.
The Los Alamos Firefighters Association, Local 3279 initiated the arbitration under the terms of the association’s collective bargaining agreement with the County after the employee lost his security clearance for failing to comply with a request from LANL staff that he submit a urine sample as part of a random drug screening process. On June 1, 2013, First Lieutenant Micah Jay Andersen formerly of Los Alamos was severely injured by an improvised explosive device (IED) while leading his platoon on a mission near Kandahar Afghanistan.
