Splash ‘n Dash #1 Results Announced

The annual Splash ‘n Dash series began June 26 as a training event for the Los Alamos Triathlon, which occurs Aug. 17.

Splash ‘n Dash will occur every other Wednesday leading up to the Los Alamos Triathlon.

New this year is an even shorter course for the youngest athletes – a 100-yard swim followed by a quick run along the Canyon Road sidewalk.

Pet of the Week: Cessna the Shepherd/Lab Mix

SHELTER News:
 
Cessna is a German Shepherd/Lab mix found near the Los Alamos Airport last summer. He will give you lots of licks and tail wags.
 
The shelter staff recently introduced Cessna to a male malamute mix at the shelter, and they became best buds, so Cessna might do okay with the company of some male dogs, but might prefer the company of a “girlfriend” instead.

2013 SBA Scores Show Record Gains in High School Reading Proficiency

BERNALILLO – Gov. Susana Martinez announced Friday the results of the latest Standards Based Assessment (NMSBA), administered earlier this year to New Mexico students in 3rd through 8th grades, as well as 10th and 11th grades.

 

New Mexico’s 11th grade class posted impressive gains in reading proficiency, increasing proficiency rates by 9.9 percentage points over 2012 – to the highest level seen since the NMSBA began in 2007. After five days of training camp that began with 26 players on June 24 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., USA Basketball today named the official, 12-man roster for the 2013 USA Basketball Men’s World University Games Team.

State Tightens Sex Offender Registration Laws

SANTA FE – Gov. Susana Martinez has unveiled a new, central location for New Mexicans to find sex offender information state-wide, including real-time e-mail notifications if an offender moves into your community.

This marks the first time that sex offender registration information is available to parents and the community in a single source that is consistent throughout New Mexico.

Two Los Alamos Businesses Receive Venture Acceleration Fund Awards

The two Los Alamos businesses receiving Venture Acceleration Fund Awards are GeoEnergy Monitoring Systems, Inc. and SportXast of Los Alamos.

GeoEnergy Monitoring Systems will use the funds tocontribute to the development of a seismo-acoustic system to monitor seismic activity where hydrofracturing (fracking) and fluid injection projects are occurring. The smart-sensor technology will be offered to field operators at a fraction of the cost of current systems.

Smith’s/Kroger Officially Notifies County: Trinity Site is a go!

COUNTY News:

Today, Los Alamos County received official notification from Smith’s/Kroger that the lease feasibility period has ended and that the terms of the ground lease with the County will be in full effect.

Now, Smith’s/Kroger is set to begin the initial development phase, including construction of the anchor building (Smith’s Marketplace), at least one other tenant of approximately 10,500 square feet, all parking and other site work.
