Starting Friday, July 5, Bandelier National Monument will be offering the popular Nightwalks each week (weather permitting) until the end of August.

As a solo traveler, I’ve learned the hard way that there is no one to count on but myself. That means I have to be über-responsible, always alert and on guard.

Traveling in second- and third-world countries, every day is a training ground. During the June 28 ‘Downtown Friday Nights’ at the Bradbury Science Musesum, Chris Danley demonstrated what people miss in the blink of an eye. Firefighters Respond to Four Lightning Fires

SFNF News:

SANTA FEFirefighters responded to four lightning caused fires as a result of Friday’s massive thunderstorm in the area.

The Rattlesnake, Alameda and San Antonio fires all located on the west side of the Forest within the Jemez Mountains have been contained. The fires ranged in size from .10 to .25 acres.

Firefighters are still working to contain the Aragon Fire, also burning in the Jemez Mountains.

The annual Splash ‘n Dash series began June 26 as a training event for the Los Alamos Triathlon, which occurs Aug. 17.

Splash ‘n Dash will occur every other Wednesday leading up to the Los Alamos Triathlon.

New this year is an even shorter course for the youngest athletes – a 100-yard swim followed by a quick run along the Canyon Road sidewalk.

Cessna is a German Shepherd/Lab mix found near the Los Alamos Airport last summer. He will give you lots of licks and tail wags.
 
The shelter staff recently introduced Cessna to a male malamute mix at the shelter, and they became best buds, so Cessna might do okay with the company of some male dogs, but might prefer the company of a “girlfriend” instead.

2013 SBA Scores Show Record Gains in High School Reading Proficiency

BERNALILLO – Gov. Susana Martinez announced Friday the results of the latest Standards Based Assessment (NMSBA), administered earlier this year to New Mexico students in 3rd through 8th grades, as well as 10th and 11th grades.

 

New Mexico’s 11th grade class posted impressive gains in reading proficiency, increasing proficiency rates by 9.9 percentage points over 2012 – to the highest level seen since the NMSBA began in 2007.
