LDS Church Hosts Preparedness Fair Sept. 21
LDS News:
The Santa Fe Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which includes three wards in Los Alamos County (Los Alamos, Pajarito and White Rock Wards) is sponsoring a Preparedness Fair, titled “Oil in Your Lamp.”
The Fair is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 at the White Rock Building of the LDS Church, 366 Grand Canyon Dr. in White Rock. The event is free and open to everyone.

An as-yet-undisclosed Los Alamos National Laboratory official will “revive” the 69-year-old tradition of playing a corpse on stage this weekend in the Los Alamos Little Theater’s production of “Arsenic and Old Lace.”

Board Approves Master’s Degree Program for Teachers
Assistant Superintendent Gerry Washburn, left, and Superintendent Gene Schmidt asked the School Board Tuesday night to grant approval of a plan to create a master’s degree program for Los Alamos teachers. Although the program will require initial funding, the increase in State funding received by the district for having teachers with higher levels of education will offset much of the cost in the future, Schmidt explained. FCC Will Address Rural Dropped Calls

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., welcomed news that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will take steps to prevent telecommunications operators from dropping calls from rural customers.
During a hearing of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government, Udall, who chairs the subcommittee, secured the promise from FCC Chairwoman Mignon Clyburn that FCC regulators will ensure providers will no longer discriminate against calls coming from rural areas.

PLAN Test for Sophomores Set for Oct. 26

Los Alamos High School will administer the PLAN test 7:45-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26.
The PLAN test is offered by the ACT Company, and is designed specifically for sophomores.
Unlike the PSAT, the PLAN test is optional and is only offered to sophomores. In addition to measuring English, math, reading and science reasoning in a format similar to that of the ACT, the PLAN provides additional assessment of study skills, educational needs and career choices.
Space for this test is limited, so interested sophomores are encouraged to register quickly.
