By DAVID CARROLL
Los Alamos

Between 2003 and 2008, I and several other interested citizens served on the Bond Oversight Committee for Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS).

We were tasked with assisting LAPS in reviewing and prioritizing projects funded by the various bonds, referenda, etc., passed by Los Alamos voters.

The committee was an interesting assignment and offered detailed insight into how the New Mexico PED allocates funding and interacts with local school districts. One fact repeated frequently was that

Letter To The Editor: Respectfully Disagree With Rosy View

By KENNETH HANSON
Los Alamos

Letter to the Editor, response to George Chandler’s comment: I respectfully disagree with your rosy view of Obama’s reign, George, and feel compelled to respond.

Obama did not “end” two wars; he simply ended the US involvement in Iraq by withdrawing our troops on an arbitrary publicized schedule. That turned out to be disastrous for Iraq, as well as the Middle East and the World because the ensuing turmoil undoubtedly aided the growth of ISIS. Even though he reversed that policy in Afghanistan, he did not leave enough troops there to stabilize the country. Read More

By MORRIE PONGRATZ
Voice of the Hilltoppers

The 18th ranked Hilltoppers lost the middle game of their “home team game” binge to the 17th ranked Artesia Bulldogs on Friday night.

The game was even at 40-40 going into the fourth quarter, but the Bulldog switch to a 2-3 zone defense in the fourth quarter effectively shut down the Toppers. Once the Bulldogs got the lead they went into a 4-corners stall and held on for the win.

The Toppers were led in scoring by sophomore guard, Jack Stewart. He had 16 points, 11 of them in the second half. The 6’5” junior post, Adam Paulson, had 13 points and 8 rebounds for the Read More

Op-Ed: Why New Mexico Needs Bail Reform

Justice Charles W. Daniels

By Justice Charles W. Daniels
New Mexico Supreme Court

On recommendation of the New Mexico Supreme Court, a bipartisan group of legislators has introduced Senate Joint Resolution 1, which would allow voters to decide whether to reform antiquated bail provisions in our state constitution. Currently, the constitution guarantees the right to get out of jail before trial for virtually all defendants, no matter how dangerous, if they can get their hands on enough money to post bond or if they can make payment arrangements with a bail bondsman.
