Letter To The Editor: AAUW Urges Yes Vote On HB33 Mill Levy

By AAUW-Los Alamos
Coordinating Council

The Los Alamos branch of AAUW (American Association of University Women) urges the voters of Los Alamos County to cast a yes vote in the HB33 Mill Levy election. Mail-in ballots for this special election must be received in the County Clerk’s office by 7 p.m. Jan. 26.

Passage of this mill levy will provide our schools with more than $2 million annually for the next six years to improve computer networks and equipment, replace musical instruments, purchase athletic equipment, upgrade heating and cooling systems, and fund activity buses.

The election will not increase property taxes but will simply continue the current levy of $3.246 per $1,000 assessed (or net taxable) value. This amounts to $108 of taxes for every $100,000 of appraised (or full) value for residential and nonresidential property.

Approved by voters since 1988, the HB33 Mill Levy will help ensure that our students and teachers have the equipment and facilities needed for educational excellence. AAUW-Los Alamos supports adequate and equitable funding for quality public education because it is the basis of our democratic society and a key to both economic prosperity and gender equality.

A yes vote on this mill levy will help provide the learning environment and resources needed by today’s students to succeed.
