One of the signs of spring in the Jemez Mountains is male elk and deer shedding their antlers. People like to collect these ”sheds”, which is fine on private land or areas administered by the Bureau of Land Management or the US Forest Service. However, it is illegal on the Valles Caldera National Preserve or Bandelier National Monument, or other National Park Service areas.

James Richard Eichor, age 83, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2016 at Stonebrook Assisted Living in Denison, Texas. He loved his family, family vacations, taking pictures, airplanes, and automobiles. He was loved by everyone, and will be dearly missed by all.

Mr. Eichor was born on April 17, 1932 in Guthrie Center, Iowa, the son of Hugh and Opal Eichor. He married Alice Marie Spain in Casey, Iowa in Feb 1954. He enlisted in the Marines in 1952 and received his boot camp training at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, CA. As Read More

SANTA FE  The New Mexico Environment Department’s Occupational Health and Safety Bureau (OHSB) presented Deming’s Southwest Wineries with the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) award for exemplary injury and illness prevention. Southwest Wineries becomes one of nine recognized SHARP participants in New Mexico.

TAOS  At around 11 p.m., March 23, a New Mexico State Police officer in Taos responded to a call of an unresponsive female at a residence on Archuleta Road in Taos County. In assessing the unresponsive female at the scene, the officer noticed what appeared to be signs of recent drug usage.

PHOENIX  The Internal Revenue Service reminds taxpayers who turned 70½ during 2015 that in most cases they must start receiving required minimum distributions (RMDs) from Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) and workplace retirement plans by April 1, 2016.

As a citizen who has seen both the hemorrhaging of money and the loss of good people during the last few years, and who has been, like most citizens, treated like a mushroom during these legal battles, I would like to see more transparency, better personnel policies, and fewer lawsuits.

The public has little recourse in these matters other than to see that our Council sets the bar high and holds the county administration accountable for good government. Susan’s (O’Leary) letter is a good start.
