Santa Fe Botanical Garden Announces Access Program For Low-Income Families

SANTA FE — Santa Fe Botanical Garden announced that it has joined Museums for All, a signature access program of the Association of Children’s Museums (ACM) and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to encourage families of all backgrounds to visit museums regularly and build lifelong museum habits.
 
The program will enable low-income families to visit the Santa Fe Botanical Garden at no cost per person with the presentation of an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card. Families can also visit any participating museum

Heinrich Joins Fights To Urge Court To Recognize Protections For LGBT Americans

WASHINGTON, D.C.  U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and 127 Members of Congress filed an amicus brief in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in the case of Christiansen v. Omnicom Group, Inc., arguing that workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity is already prohibited under the Civil Rights Act of 1964 since these types of discrimination are inherently linked to sex discrimination.

Am-241 from Santa Fe to LANL:
 
A recent local incident involved a radioactive americium source (Am-241) found in Santa Fe and tranferred to LANL This cost $6 million (paid by the business owner) and involved 40 people. The source was actually of no health or safety concern and could have been transported in a pickup by one or two people. Ignorance of ionizing radiation led to an unnecessary action that cost significant money.

The Family YMCA’s Ed Griggs Memorial Golf Tournament drew 24 teams of 94 players Saturday, June 11, to the Los Alamos Golf Course. A foster mother addressed the crowd and expressed her appreciation of Y scholarships. The annual event netted $13,615 for Y program scholarships.

As the youth member who developed the idea of holding the project to Clean Up the decades of paint-related litter on LA Mountain, I’d like to thank you all dearly for allowing my club, Rotary Interact, and me the permission to clean up the notorious LA Mountain in Los Alamos.

Starting July 5, the International Shakespeare Center (ISC) begins a series of presentations called Shakespeare Talks!, 6-7:30 p.m., the first Tuesday of each month at the Santa Fe Woman’s Club.

Teachers are always looking for ways to encourage students to go after their goals and dreams. Renee Mitsunaga, the art teacher at Chamisa and the district’s 2016 Teacher of the Year, found a unique and authentic way to teach a lesson on perseverance.  

During art classes, her students created their own Darumas. A Daruma is a Japanese toy modeled after Bodhidarma, the founder of Zen Buddhism. Modern Darumas can be painted to look like the person who owns it, or an animal.   Read More

Orphaned Bear Cubs Sent To Dr. Kathleen Ramsay

LEWF News:

Land of Enchantment Wildlife Foundation received the great news Saturday that the two bear cubs from the unfortunate attack on the runner in the recent Valles Caldera Runs event had been trapped, and on their way to Dr. Kathleen Ramsay of the Land of Enchantment Wildlife Foundation.

Quickly, LEWF board members helped Dr. Ramsay get her Intensive Care cage ready to receive the new cubs, and soon the cubs had a safe place to call home for the next six months.

As the cubs grow, Dr. Ramsay will move them to larger cages, and ultimately they will be released.
