Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS) will be hosting Open Houses for families beginning next week.
This is an opportunity for families to meet teachers, learn class expectations and check out what’s new at their school for the 2023-2024 school year.
Here is the schedule for Open House:

The trading card game Lorcana is coming to Los Alamos! Mesa Top Games & Toys in Los Alamos earned early approval to host Organized Play for Disney Lorcana by Ravensburger.
Lorcana is a trading card game (TCG) similar to tabletop card games, like Magic the Gathering and Pokémon, but with a host of familiar Disney features. Players act as Ilumineers who have been brought to the realm of Lorcana. With the help of magical ink, Ilumineers summon glimmers (Disney characters) to help collect lore faster than their opponent. County Announces Loma Linda Road Improvements Project
Los Alamos County Public Works Division is under contract with Albuquerque Asphalt, Inc. to start work on the Loma Linda Roadway Improvements project on La Mirada Circle, La Tierra Road and Loma Linda Drive in the Loma Linda neighborhood.
The contractor is performing preliminary work such as mobilization, construction staking, and staging area setup. This work will be in preparation to start construction work activities soon after. The project scope was presented to the public at the regularly scheduled Transportation Board held in June.

DANIEL CARLOS VALDEZ SR May 2, 1924 – Aug. 4, 2023
Daniel Carlos Valdez Senior of Los Alamos, New Mexico passed away on Friday, August 4, 2023, at the age of 99. After several months of declining health, Daniel died peacefully in his sleep at Sombrillo Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Daniel was born in Antonito, Colorado on May 2, 1924, to Andres Valdez and Petronila Martinez. He was the youngest of ten children. After graduating from Antonito High School in 1943, Daniel studied for the priesthood at the Passionist Preparatory Junior College, in St. Louis, MO, but had to withdraw due to illness. Read More

There’s still time to register for the Hilltopper 5K! The race starts at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19 at Canyon Rim Trail beginning at the west end of the Canyon Rim Trail in the Smith’s Marketplace parking lot.
The race will be an out and back course along the paved trail. The attached course map shows the route. A one mile run for kids is included and starts at 8 a.m. Packet pick-up will be between 3-7 p.m., Friday at the Aquatic Center, or beginning at 7 a.m. at the race location on Saturday.

Constitution Day, Sept. 17, celebrates the U.S. Constitution and the freedoms it protects. The annual Constitution Day Essay Contest, sponsored by the Los Alamos Federated Republican Women (LAFRW), is designed to challenge students to learn more about the Constitution and to express original, thoughtful ideas in essay writing.
Essays are judged on how completely and clearly the ideas are stated and supported. Grammar, spelling and punctuation are also considered. Judging is blind. The contest is for students in grades 4-12 who live or attend school in Los Alamos County.
