Dominic Montaño and Milnor Branch graduated Aug. 8 from the Newport News Nuclear BWXT Los Alamos (N3B) Nuclear Operator Apprenticeship Program (NOAP). The two most recent graduates celebrated this milestone at Northern New Mexico College (NNMC) with family, friends and leaders from N3B and NNMC.

Santa Fe National Forest Lifts Campfire Restrictions

SANTA FE — The Santa Fe National Forest will lift campfire and smoking restrictions effective 8 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, 2023, based on decreasing fire danger.
Fire managers continually evaluate conditions across the forest to determine when to implement or rescind fire restrictions. With the onset of the more traditional monsoonal weather pattern, fire danger has significantly decreased with the increased moisture, cloud cover, and higher humidity.

FBI: Fargo Man Pleads Guilty To Second Degree Murder And Voluntary Manslaughter In Indian Country

ALBUQUERQUE — Alexander M.M. Uballez, United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico, and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office, announced that Shilo Aaron Oldrock, 30, and an enrolled member of the Spirit Lake Sioux Tribe, pled guilty in federal court to second degree murder and voluntary manslaughter.
Oldrock will remain in custody pending sentencing which has not been scheduled.

LAPD Passes 2023 Annual National Accreditation Review
Los Alamos Police Chief Dino Sgambellone has announced that the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) has successfully completed the annual review of the advanced law enforcement accreditation program for the Los Alamos Police Department (LAPD). LAPD completed the week long review in July 2023.
LAPD has been fully accredited since 2018 and is one of three law enforcement agencies Nationally accredited within New Mexico. The other two agencies are the Farmington Police Department and New Mexico State Police.

MESCALERO – Leadership from New Mexico’s 23 Nations, Tribes, and Pueblos met with Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, Lt. Gov. Howie Morales, Cabinet Secretaries and Tribal liaisons for the annual State Tribal Leader Summit, held July 5-6, 2023.
The annual summit was established in 2009 under the State Tribal Collaboration Act to ensure that Tribal priorities inform state policy. SANTA FE — The New Mexico Supreme Court (NMSC) Monday upheld a man’s convictions for first-degree murder and other charges for a 2008 killing in which the victim was shot at least 18 times and his body burned in a sparsely populated area south of Albuquerque known as Pajarito Mesa.
In a unanimous decision, the Court rejected a “novel argument” by Jaime Veleta that a Bernalillo County jury’s verdict was legally inconsistent because he was convicted of first-degree murder but acquitted of the lesser-included offenses of second-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter.
