Strong Kids Classic Honors Ed Griggs

As part of the Family YMCA Annual Campaign, its 2012 Golf Tournament is set for a 1 p.m., Shotgun Start/Scramble Held at Los Alamos Golf Course Saturday, June 9. Registration is now full for this year’s event.

The Family YMCA’s third Annual Strong Kids Classic Golf Tournament has changed its official name to the Ed Griggs Memorial Strong Kids Classic to remember long-time Y friend and golf community member, Ed Griggs.

Bandelier ‘Get Outdoors Day’ is Fee Free!

Saturday, June 9, will be the first celebration of “Get Outdoors Day,” meant to encourage healthy, active outdoors fun.

Also known as GO Day, it will be a fee free day in National Park areas nationwide.

At Bandelier National Monument, Superintendent Jason Lott will be sponsoring a family hike, meeting at 8 a.m. at the Burnt Mesa trailhead.

Along with Lott’s family, participants will hike out along the established trail and come back on an off-trail return route that is being considered to make the trail a loop.

Committee Favors Naming Trail After Satch Cowan

LOS ALAMOS COUNTY News:
Los Alamos County held a public hearing Tuesday evening regarding a recent citizen petition to name or rename a trail in the Quemazon Trail Complex in the Western Area after deceased local resident and hiking enthusiast Helen “Satch” Cowan.
After hearing public comments, the Committee discussed the request and asked several questions of the petitioners, as well as to County Open Space Specialist Craig Martin, before unanimously voting 6-0 in favor of naming a new trail the “Satch Cowan Trail.”

Summerfest and Pajarito Punishment at Pajarito Mountain this Weekend

Celebrate the start of the summer season at Pajarito Mountain Saturday June 2.

The New Mexico Brewers Festival is noon to 5 p.m., featuring 15 New Mexico microbrewers and live music 1-5 p.m. with the Blue Hornets.

Lifts will run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for hiking and biking.

Atomic City Transit is providing free shuttles 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.running every 30 minutes from Sullivan Field at Los Alamos High School.

Thousands Cycle Through Red River Rally

Nearly 30,000 motorcycle riders rallied at Red River over the Memorial Day weekend.

The annual springtime event jump starts the tourist season in the Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado region.

Bandelier Extends Public Comment Period

Bandelier National Monument has extended the public comment period on the management of the Tsankawi Unit to June 15. 

Earlier this month, the park hosted two public meetings on the planning process.

They invited everyone who is interested in the future of Tsankawi to provide input on how best to manage the cultural and natural resources found there.

The Tsankawi Unit is an 826-acre area that is geographically separate from the main portion of Bandelier National Monument.

Bandelier Closure for Bridge Installation is Thursday

BANDELIER News:

Superintendent Jason Lott of Bandelier National Monument, just announced that the main Visitor Center area in Frijoles Canyon will be closed Thursday, May 24, for installation of a temporary bridge across Frijoles Creek.

This closure had originally been expected to occur today or tomorrow.

“The bridge is being brought from Michigan, and we now expect it to be ready to install on Thursday, May 24,” Lott said. “Other parts of the park, including the Tsankawi section and trails that begin at locations outside of the canyon, such as Burnt Mesa and Cerro Grande, will remain open for Read More
