Bradbury Invites Public to Share Personal Fire Stories

Interactive exhibit opens June 13

Beginning Wednesday June 13, the public is invited to Los Alamos National Laboratory’s (LANL) Bradbury Science Museum to take part in “Living With Wildfire: Share Your Stories.”

The museum will host an opening reception from 3:30-6 p.m. for the general public.

Nearly one year ago, the Las Conchas Fire burned in forest areas surrounding LANL and forced a one-week closure.

The wildfire spared the Laboratory but it affected thousands of residents in Northern New Mexico.

Little Bear Fire Consumes Nearly 35,000 Acres

The Little Bear Fire sparked by lightning June 4 near Ruidoso in the Smokey Bear Ranger District, Lincoln National Forest remains o percent contained.

The massive blaze has burned some 34,651 acres of mixed conifer and ponderosa pine and destroyed about 35 structures as of this morning.

There are currently eight Type 1 and Type 2 crews comprised of 429 firefighters battling this inferno with 47 fire engines, seven water tenders, five dozers and two Type 1 helicopters.

Colorado Peak and Bear Springs Fires Holding Despite Red Flag Conditions

Both the Colorado Peak and Bear Springs fires held Friday despite red flag conditions – hot, dry and windy weather.

Firefighters continue mop-up operations. Mop-up operations consist of putting out or removing burning material that’s near containment lines, cutting down standing dead trees and creating cup trenches to prevent debris from rolling onto unburned vegetation.

Effective this evening, the Los Alamos Fire Department will be posting signs and taping off fire rings and grills in locations throughout Los Alamos County.

Some locations in specific parks that are yet to be determined may remain open due to the location of such device in relation to safety distances from combustible and flammable material.

Friday Fire Restrictions Affect 21 Counties

Due to high fire danger across parts of the state, New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Secretary John Bemis and State Forester Tony Delfin today announced restrictions on fireworks, smoking, campfire and open-fires for all or portions of 21 counties.

The restrictions will go into effect at 8 a.m. Friday, June 8.

“Very high fire danger exists across much of western and parts of central New Mexico,” Delfin said. “I’m urging all residents in the areas affected to follow the restriction guidelines to protect lives and property in their communities.” Read More

Colorado Peak Fire: 245 acres (decrease in size due to better mapping), 80 percent contained. The Colorado Peak fire is located on the Española Ranger District, Santa Fe National Forest; approximately 10 miles northwest of the Santa Fe Airport

Bear Springs Fire: 622 acres, 90 percent contained. The Bear Springs fire is located on the Jemez Ranger District, Santa Fe National Forest; six miles northeast of Ponderosa and six miles southeast of Jemez Springs.

The Santa Fe National Forest had no new fires today. Red flag conditions — hot, dry and windy conditions are expected tomorrow. Read More

Colorado Peak Fire 65 Percent Contained

Colorado Peak Fire reported at 2:36 p.m. Wednesday approximately 10 miles northwest of the Santa Fe Airport has burned 269 acres (decrease due to better mapping) and is now 65 percent contained.

Firefighters worked through the night to contain the fire. Sparse, patchy fuels and an aggressive fire fight have helped to contain the fire.

A decrease in fire activity has also decreased smoke. Minimal smoke is expected today.
