Volunteers Needed Now for Y’s Firecracker Fun Run & Children’s Parade

FAMILY YMCA News:

The Family YMCA needs volunteers to help with its Independence Day Firecracker 5K Family Fun Run and Children’s Parade on July 4.

Sign up to help at the YMCA or call 662-3100 for more information.

Registration fee for Runners is $20 in June, $30 in July, and $10 for youth 12 & Under.

Canyon Road will be closed from 15th Street to Central Avenue from approximately 8:15 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. July 4 for the Family YMCA’s Independence Day Firecracker 5K Family Fun Run.

Registration Open for Family YMCA Independence Day 5K Family Fun Run

Registration is open for the annual Family YMCA Independence Day 5k Family Fun Run.
 
The fee is $20 in June / $30 in July. The race starts at 8 a.m., Wednesday July 4.
 
Prizes will be given for top male and female runners as well as for top costume, stroller, dog and others chosen at random.
 
The Y needs volunteers to help with the race. Sign up on-line or at the Y at the corner of 15th Street and Iris Street.
 
The annual Children’s Parade will begin at 11 a.m., following the race.

Local Man Captures Bird Development

About two months ago, a couple of Say’s Phoebes began building a nest at my back door.

The Say’s Phoebe, a passerine, is in the Tyrant-Flycatcher family. Named for Thomas Say, the American naturalist, it is a common bird in the western United States that prefers dry, desolate areas.

After the nest was built, I raised a mirror above the nest to see when things would be interesting to take pictures.

I monitored the nest by holding up the mirror until the first chick appeared, then photographed one or two times a week.

Local Swimmer Jackie Marr Competes in Italy

Los Alamos swimmer Jackie Marr, 69, recently participated in the 14th FINA World Masters Championship swim meet in Riccione, Italy.

The event is the Federation’s biggest competition in terms of participation, for the reason that it welcomes, every two years, swimmers, divers and water polo players aged 25 to more than a 100 years old from all corners of the world.

Marr works out several times a day at the Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center as well as with youth on various local swim teams when she has filled in as a substitute coach.

Longtime Los Alamos Police Department Records Specialist Sandra J. Quintana lost her husband Julian eight years ago.

Julian Quintana was killed by a drunk driver Feb. 9, 2004, on his way to work at the County’s Abiqui plant. He had worked for Los Alamos County for 27 years.
