Horizons Preschool Becoming Own Entity

After 19 years as a preschool and 29 years as an afterschool program through White Rock United Methodist Church (WRUMC), Horizons Preschool and Daycare is becoming its own entity.

“Horizons is becoming a separate entity from WRUMC financially, for tax purposes, but will continue the strong Christian and proven academic curriculum that it now uses,” Horizons Board President Nancy Ferenbaugh said.

Vehicle Plows into McDonalds

A vehicle crashed into the front wall of McDonald’s at 1247 Trinity Dr. this morning. People were sitting at tables eating on the other side of the wall where the impact occurred. Employees said no one was injured and that they believe the 95-year-old driver was parked and he inadvertently put the car in drive rather than reverse and stepped on the accelerator when attempting to leave the restaurant. Renowned Scientist George Cowan Has Died

Internationally renowned scientist George A. Cowan has died. 

Cowan was a scientist, philanthropist and businessman who conducted early research for the Manhattan Project and went on to found Los Alamos National Bank and the Santa Fe Institute.

Los Alamos National Laboratory issued the following statement today on the death of the Laboratory’s Senior Fellow.

“Dr. Cowan was a central figure at the Laboratory for 39 years. As a Senior Fellow and Los Alamos National Laboratory Medal Winner, he set an example of service to the nation that we strive to follow today. Read More

New Business Plan, New Funding Help Baldrige Program Move Forward

The Baldrige Performance Excellence Program (BPEP), managed for 25 years by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in collaboration with the private sector, has announced that it is transitioning to a new business model that will move the program from federal government funding to a self-sustaining operation. NIST will continue its leadership role in managing the program, but it will be funded through a combination of new fees together with expanded support from the private sector.

Pajarito Greenhouse is known for strong plants

Even when April days remain blustery, Los Alamos residents can be sure spring is just around the corner when Pajarito Greenhouse is once again open for business.

This year, the greenhouse will open Wednesday, April 25.

Pajarito Greenhouse is a department of CB FOX Department Store, but it’s located at the home of Anne and Dave Fox at 238 Rio Bravo in the Pajarito Acres section of White Rock.

For 17 years, the greenhouse has provided the community with well-rooted, hardy plants in pots, ready to go in the ground, plus gardening supplies.
