SHELTER News:

Ralphie, 3, is a DSH spayed, female tabby/tortie, given for adoption with her friend Mo.

Shy at first, Ralphie has come out of her shell and now lets shelter volunteers pet and admire her, however, she reportedly does not care for dogs.

The Los Alamos Animal Shelter, 226 East Road, (505) 662-8179, has a great selection of on-site adoptable pets waiting for a home. Others reside off-campus in foster homes.

We are now working on a proposal that will go through County staff and then back to the Council.

Valles Caldera Announces Winter Recreation Schedule

VCT News:

Jemez Springs – Snowshoeing, cross country skiing and sleigh rides highlight a full calendar of winter activities announced by the Valles Caldera National Preserve today. The schedule also includes two free snowshoeing and skiing access days.

Winter hours are 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at the Valle Grande Staging Area. An expanded holiday schedule will run 9 a.m.–5 p.m., every day from Dec. 26 through Jan. 6.

New this season, the preserve will remain open for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Jan. 21 and President’s Day, Feb. 18.

Los Alamos Canyon Bridge Work Begins Nov. 17

COUNTY News:

 A damaged expansion joint on the south end of the Los Alamos Canyon Bridge, known as Omega Bridge, is being replaced beginning Saturday, Nov. 17.

Los Alamos National Laboratory plans to do the work on weekends when vehicle traffic is reduced. Planned workdays include Nov. 17, Nov. 18, Dec. 1 and Dec. 2.

One lane of the bridge will be closed in each direction and there may be brief periods when traffic is stopped while material is being moved, said Vince Sing of Project Management.

School Board Moves Projects Forward

During its regular meeting Tuesday night, the Los Alamos School Board approved hiring two companies to move projects forward in the district.

With the board’s nod to contract with Brian McPartlon Roofing, Pinon Elementary School’s roof replacement project will soon start.

Chief Financial Officer John Wolfe explained that the district received funds from the Public Schools Facilities Authority (PSFA) to rebuild a portion of the roof at the elementary school.

ROBERT E. SHAFER June 2, 1936Nov. 11, 2012

Robert E. Shafer died suddenly at his home Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012.  Born in Berkeley, Calif., June 2, 1936, he was 76 years old. 

He is survived by his wife Ann Shafer, his sister Gretchen Simpkins, and his beloved Scottish terrier Rosie. He was preceded in death by his brother Paul and by his parents Margaret Shafer and Eugene Shafer.

Robert Shafer was a recognized expert in beam instrumentation for charged-particle accelerators. He is best known for his world-class expertise on Beam Position Monitors.
