Letter to the Editor: For Those of You Angry (pro or con) at this Whole Sordid UNM-LA Affair

By BILL SELLERS
Los Alamos

The origin of, and its guaranteed tax-seeking continuance, lays in the bad asset management policies of the Los Alamos County Council.

UNM-LA is one of many assets. Others are pure “rent-seeking”, i.e. the airport: $50-60 million in commercial value, held for less than 75 individuals & their airplanes; the golf course: $60-75 million acreage value + a new $6 million taxpayer-funded “restaurant-community center”, held for a rapidly diminished golfcourse user-census, when we badly need decent starter home sites for younger residents, etc., etc.

Letter to the Editor: The Failing Mil Levy May Bring to Light What is Needed at UNM-LA

By RICHARD SAUNDERS
Los Alamos

Shame, Mr. Soran? Why is there any amount of shame for this community for failing to pass the UNM-LA mill levy? We are indeed a town built on higher education, so one should expect this town to make decisions with higher thinking.

Higher thinking requires collecting some data. UNM-LA tuition is a mere 30 percent of tuition at UNM Main Campus. UNM-LA tuition is 56 percent of Northern New Mexico College. Los Alamos also boasts one of the highest per capita scores for individuals with doctoral degrees, and the most recent US Census states that 63.9 percent of our adults Read More

Letter to the Editor: Los Alamos Police Department Problems Should Be Resolved Post-Haste … Not Left for New Chief to Handle

By ALITA WINE
Los Alamos

I can understand Mr. Pippin’s frustration at the system in place to meet the canditates for chief, but his letter brought up additional questions.

The problem with the Police Department seems to be lack of leadership. They should not be waiting for new leadership in the Police Department, but rather be taken care of issues as they arise. And if the Acting Chief doesn’t have the authority to do so, it should be taken care of post-haste by the County Administrator.

That is why the County, and every other government agency, has hierarchical leadership.
