Free Bridge Lessons At Pinon and LAMS

Volunteers from the Los Alamos Duplicate Bridge Club are offering free bridge lessons, starting the first week of September, to students at Los Alamos Middle School and to students in grades 3-6 at Pinon Elementary School.

The demilitarized C-130 airplane from Kirtland Air Force Base finally arrived at N.M. 4 and Rover Boulevard at 4:30 p.m. today after being delayed since Wednesday trying to obtain permission to pass through Santa Fe. The plane is surplus from Kirtland AFB and has been given to Los Alamos National Laboratory for emergency response training at Technical Area 49. Los Alamos County Sheriff Marco Lucero released an advisory today alerting the residents of Los Alamos County of a scam that has been reported to his office.
A person(s) is posing as a Los Alamos Sheriff’s Department deputy and calling local residents advising them that they failed to report for jury duty and deputies have a warrant for their arrest.
The caller advises the victim to pay a fine and their warrant will be quashed.

Magistrate Judge Pat Casados Orders Steven C. Porter to Pay Nearly $100K in Cash to Get Out of Jail

In order to get out of jail this time, Steven C. Porter of Pajarito Acres in White Rock must pay nearly $100,000 in cash after being arrested Monday and charged with violating the terms of his release.
Police suspect Porter removed the electronic monitoring bracelet attached to his ankle for some 20 hours between Friday and Saturday. A truck was vandalized about a mile from his home within that time period.

In seperate hearings this morning in Los Alamos Magistrate Court, Judge Pat Casados set bond for an Ojo Caliente couple who are engaged to be married. The couple is charged in a string of local residential burglaries over the past two months.

Ortiz-Merrifield, 20, is charged with five counts of conspiracy to commit burglary (4th degree felonies) and one count of burglary of a dwelling (3rd degree felony). “The Giver” is another young adult novel turned to film that presents a dystopian vision of the future. And like the others we’ve seen in recent years—“Hunger Games,” “Divergent”—it succeeds in making me want to read the book after seeing the film.
From much younger friends, I have heard that the film doesn’t do the book justice. But that is usually the case in movies that have to tell the fullness of a story in less than two hours.
