Los Alamos County officials would like to remind the public that springtime typically brings with it an increase of large predators roaming throughout the forests and traveling on the trails surrounding the area – and that means some of these animals will likely enter the community’s residential areas, too.

To remember the first Earth Day in Los Alamos County, one must give credit where it is due – the Los Alamos High School students to Save Our Environment.
 
A group of very concerned students answered the call of a teacher and formed a group to determine how to plan for a first Earth Day. They were linking up with the efforts of the newly formed Citizens for Clean Air and Water, a group of citezens and lab scientists who had begun addressing the deadly air pollution from the Four Corners power plants.

DOE Issues WIPP Radiological Release Phase II Investigation Report

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management (EM) released Thursday the Accident Investigation Board (AIB) Phase II Report related to the Feb. 14, 2014, radiological event at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) near Carlsbad. 

The AIB completed an exhaustive investigation at WIPP and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) to examine the cause of the radiological release at WIPP and identify managerial controls and safety measures necessary to prevent or minimize the probability or severity of a recurrence of this type of accident.

New Awards For Advanced Nuclear Energy Development

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Building on the President’s all-of-the-above energy strategy and efforts to expand clean energy innovation, the Department of Energy today awarded more than $5 million to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing nuclear engineering degrees and other nuclear science and engineering programs relevant to nuclear energy.

Pet Of The Week: Willow The Cattle Dog Cross

Willow is a petite, 7-year-old female cattle dog cross. Her family was forced to move when their rental house was sold, so she is back at the shelter, where she was adopted a few years ago.

Willow does well with adults and gentle children, but she can be a bit protective of her family around other dogs.
