Heart Disease And Diabetes—Is There A Connection?

By KAMEL ABOUDA, MD
Espanola Family Care Clinic

Sometimes trouble comes in twos—like heart disease and diabetes. And these two diseases are actually linked in three ways.

  1. Unhealthy lifestyle habits. Obesity, lack of physical activity and an unhealthy diet can set the stage for developing both heart disease and diabetes. High blood pressure, elevated cholesterol and smoking also raise the risk for both diseases.
  2.  Having diabetes can lead to heart disease. A man’s risk for heart disease is doubled if he has diabetes, whereas a woman’s risk is tripled. That’s partly because

Reward Yourself For Healthy Choices

By TERESA REYNOLDS, MSA, RN
Chief Nursing Officer,
Los Alamos Medical Center

Healthy lifestyle habits are your best defense against heart disease, but changing habits isn’t easy.

Whether you’re trying to eat a heart-healthy diet, get more exercise to strengthen your heart, lose a few pounds or make another healthy change in your life, it can be tough to stay motivated as the weeks go by. That’s where rewards can keep you inspired and motivated to reach your long-term goal.

Set a specific short-term goal that you have to reach to get a reward. For example, your goal is to lose 10 pounds in the next six Read More

Cinema Cindy Reviews ‘The Hateful Eight’

By CYNTHIA BIDDLECOMB
Los Alamos

“The Hateful Eight” is Quentin Tarantino’s eighth movie as writer and director. If you know anything about Tarantino, you either hate his films or have a sense of guilt about loving to see what over-the-top thing he’ll do next.

This movie will not change your mind about hating or loving Tarantino films. Just look at the rating: “Rated R for strong bloody violence, a scene of violent sexual content, language and some graphic nudity.” You can take that as a warning.

Living Well Los Alamos: Slow Cooker Month

By HELEN IDZOREK
Extension Home Economist

With the New Year upon us many of us make resolutions to improve our health—both physically and financially.

January is Slow Cooker Month. Slow cookers use less electricity than an oven and because they use long, low temperature cooking, less expensive cuts of meat come out tender. Though we often turn to slow cookers for making winter soups and stews, they also work well in the summer as they do not heat up the kitchen like an oven. You can use your saved time from slow cooking to be physically active or to spend time with your family.

Pastor Granillo: This Is Our Story

“We adore chaos because we love to produce order.” – M.C. Escher

I doubt that too many would argue about mankind’s inherit desire to produce order out the chaos of this world. As soon as we are born we seem to struggle against chaos by trying to order our lives and predict their paths. But it seems that bringing order from the chaos—both at a personal level and a global level—may be a losing battle. For all the good we bring into life, we often find we may bring just as much bad.

The Bible talks about this issue, in fact, I would say that this issue is interwoven into the entire Read More

Gibson: LANL Contract Change Merits Attention More Than Worry

By ROBERT GIBSON
Los Alamos

Here we go again. Another change in the LANL management contract is coming in two to three years. What can we expect? What can we do about it?

Few would claim that the Lab has been more productive under LANS than its pre-2006 predecessor, UC. How fault should be apportioned among this particular management team, the for-profit business model, or DOE’s bureaucratic oversight is debatable. The first will change, the second may or may not. The third won’t.

In any case, the sun will keep rising. Virtually all employees, with the exception of some senior managers, will

It Was An Honor To Serve As County Council Chair

By KRISTIN HENDERSON
Los Alamos County Councilor

I am writing this letter to say thank you to my fellow community members, and my fellow County Councilors, for the opportunity to serve Los Alamos as the Chair of the Los Alamos County Council for 2015.

As most, but not all, of our community knows, Los Alamos is both a city and a county, effectively, under the New Mexico Constitution; the only such entity in the State. Accordingly, rather than have both a County Commission and a City Council for the same geography – and more importantly, the same citizens – our “forefathers” in the 1960s Read More
