By GEORGE MORSE
Los Alamos Daily Post
Sports and Outdoors

We had some beneficial rain over the weekend. It was most welcome. Though still not enough to lift the closure of Santa Fe National Forest lands, the rain-cooled air was refreshing. There’s nothing quite like the smell of the land after a rainstorm. Driving from Espanola to Abiquiu Lake Saturday (6/17), I was able to make the trip with my windows open and without running the air conditioner. It was wonderful.

As already mentioned, Santa Fe National Forest land remain closed. This includes all the streams in the Jemez Mountains,

Letter To The Editor: Problems Escalating At Skate Park

By Concerned Parent
Los Alamos

The skate park has become increasingly problematic.

My children have encountered bullying, profanity, profane music and sexual harassment.

I’m not looking to label any kids as “bad”, but instead increase awareness of this issue, so that we can provide a safe environment for all children, where they don’t feel threatened or scared.

This is especially important due to the proximity of younger children at the nearby park, and at the library.

Letter To The Editor: Folks Shouting Past Each Other

By KHALIL J. SPENCER
Santa Fe

I saw yet another letter in the Los Alamos Daily Post where it looks like folks are still shouting past each other. So here goes. First, some caveats.

1. I don’t like the idea of piling more laws on people, but gun culture has changed. More households owned guns when I was young, but we didn’t have this “me too” movement of mass shootings. Plus, to borrow an analysis from Wake Forest University’s David Yamane, Gun Culture 1.0 was about gunsport and hunting. Gun Culture 2.0 is about self defense, i.e., shooting people. I think that transition Read More

Letter To The Editor: I Have Read Your Entire Letter…

By Linda vanDyck
Albuquerque

I have read your entire letter (Robert Visel) and would like to address your points one-by-one.

The gun problem in this country is both the user AND the gun. Without the gun, the user cannot do anywhere near the damage that he/she can do with the gun … it’s the combination that’s deadly.

Guns haven’t changed???? At the time the second amendment was written, guns fired one shot then had to be cumbersomely reloaded. No one at that time could possibly have conceived the weapons that are available today.

Today’s kids have become spoiled brats?  There have always Read More
