This is just a reminder that all Early Voting ends at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3.
Voting locations include:
Los Alamos Community Building at 29th Street and Central Avenue;
White Rock Fire Station #3 on N.M. 4; and
Los Alamos County Clerk’s Office at Oppenheimer Drive and Central Avenue.
Nov. 6 General Election Day voting will be at three locations from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. including Los Alamos Community Building, White Rock Fire Station #3 and Trinity on the Hill Church-Kelly Hall.

Several years ago I and my fellow councilors passed a non-partisen motion to appoint a citizen committee to review the county charter since several petitions had been brought by citizens but were found to be illegal.
Our intent was to correct any short comings that may impede citizen input to the council. Our appointed committee included several citizens who brought the problem petitions to the council.
Now three years later, Los Alamos can vote on needed amendments that clarify and simplify the county charter.

I address an interesting recent take on the charter amendments in which we were told that there is no history of abuse of the petition process in Los Alamos.
In 1979 and again in 1982 there were successful referendum petitions and subsequent elections that reversed zoning actions by the county.
But the losers of the 1982 election appealed the voter’s decision and in 1983 the Supreme Court ruled that zoning can only be done by representative bodies, not by election.
