Liam Johnson Takes Second Place in Patriot Pen Essay Contest

Liam Johnson, 7th grader at Los Alamos Middle School won 2nd place and $350 in the VFW Patriot’s Pen essay contest for the state of New Mexico.  Liam was honored at the LAMS Student of the Term Breakfast on Wed. March 28th. Ms. Gina Smith of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary will present the award and also 12 other certificates of participation to other 7th graders.

Bjorkland is Best Predictor in First Pace Race of Season

 
Lynn Bjorkland was the top predictor in the opening pace race of the 2012 season held on the Canyon Rim Trail on the first Tuesday evening pace race of the 2012 season. The number of participants that showed up made for a successful event.
 
Lynn was 10 seconds off her predicted time and was also the 2nd fastest in the 3 mile run with a time of 23:50.
 
Other accurate predictors were:  Bob Weeks with a 13 second differential, Roy Cope at 23 seconds off, and Michelle Jones 65 seconds off her prediction.

Scholarship Honors Memory of Jennifer Marie Fleming

A one time award of $1,000 is being offered by the Jennifer Marie Fleming Memorial Scholarship Fund to a graduating senior of LAHS Class of 2012. This scholarship is in memory of Jennifer Marie Fleming, a student at Los Alamos High School from 1985-87. Her enthusiasm for life, her concern for other people, and her desire to promote a drug and alcohol free environment for students are the inspiration for this award. Jennifer was killed by a drunk driver on  New Year’s Eve 1987 when she had helped plan and produce an alcohol free event for LAHS students. Prevention Today for a Healthier Tomorrow

The Family YMCA is offering free Diabetes Prevention Classes. The class is on Tuesdays from April 3rd through May 8th from 11:00 to 11:45 am. Pre-registration at the Family YMCA is required at least 48 hours prior to the session. Classes will be held at the Y’s Administrative offices located behind the Urgent Care Center on 15th and Trinity

Los Alamos Public Schools Citizens Review Committee Formed

LOS ALAMOS PUBLIC SCHOOLS News

A Citizens Review Committee was formed to review the status of the school referendum and bond projects.  This committee met for the first time on March 21, 2012. As part of their work, the committee will verify whether the school district accomplished what it set out to accomplish in its plans that were presented to the public.

DPU’s Abiquiu Hydroelectric Facility Earns Engineering Excellence Award

DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC UTILITIES News

The Los Alamos County Department of Public Utilities Abiquiu Hydroelectric Facility received another award for the low flow turbine project.

The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) New Mexico awarded the Engineering Excellence Award in the “Energy” category to AECOM for its engineering design work on the low flow project.

An award banquet is set to take place at the Sandia Hotel and Casino April 6.

Tuesday, March 27 is Diabetes Alert Day, and the Family YMCA wants residents of Los Alamos and the surrouding areas to be aware of their risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes and the preventative steps they can take today to reduce that risk. Taiji as Spiritual Practice

Beginning in April, the Unitarian Church of Los Alamos will offer a series of eight Saturday morning Taiji (T’ai Chi) classes to study the Yang Style 24 Forms. Classes will begin on Saturday, April 7th  from 11 AM to noon in Robinson Hall.

No previous experience is necessary. Classes will explore proper body alignment with coordination and flexibility exercises, and breathing techniques to cultivate the flow of Qi, or life energy.
