Springtime 2012: 50 Hikes in the Los Alamos Area

Many years ago, Frances Arnold, Carol Carlson and Maxine Ellis created a 50 Hikes trail list for friends who wanted to explore our beautiful mesas, canyons, and mountains. The Santa Fe National Forest later adopted the list as a convenience for visitors.
 

Despite subsequent publication of a number of hiking books for the area, the list still serves its purpose as a quick introduction to the east side of the Jemez Mountains. As years go by, changing conditions require that the list be revised periodically.

Classic Cars Take Tour Through Bandelier

All lined up in the Bandelier parking lot, these classic cars drew a lot of admirers Friday. The cars were Cord and Auburn automobiles from the 1930s and made in America. They were quite ahead of their time with front wheel drive, supercharged V8 engines, very aerodynamic styling, concealed door hinges … some even had headlights that turned direction along with the front wheels when turning a corner. These special automobiles were very expensive in their day, costing more than the average house (car $2,700, house $2,000). The Cord Auburn company went out of business around 1937-1938.

New Restroom Facilities for Park and Trail

The Los Alamos County Parks Division has completed two new restroom facilities. The restrooms will be put into operation on Wednesday of this week.  Dick McIntyre, Parks Division Manager reports that the restrooms were planned and budgeted as part of the Canyon Rim Trail development. 

The first restroom is found at East Park next door to the new Los Alamos County Animal Shelter.

Los Alamos Ranked Among Nation’s Top Hunting and Fishing Spots

Los Alamos is ranked 28 among the “35 Best Hunting and Fishing Towns in the U.S.,” according to OutdoorLife magazine.

The publication says about Los Alamos: “Stay close to home for walleyes, catfish, bass and trout, in waters like Abiqui Lake, Rio Chama and Rio Grande. The nearby Valles Caldera National Preserve runs a lottery program for monster elk.”

Atomic City Road Runners To Begin 39th Season

The Atomic City Road Runners (ACRR) will open the 2012 season at 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 3 at the Canyon Rim Trail off East Road (Route # 502).
 
ACRR is a family-oriented running and walking club that meets every Tuesday during the Daylight Saving Time season for a pace race in which members predict their own time. 
 
Anyone can be a winner if his/her finish time is closest to that predicted.

Girls Hockey Team Young but Competitive

Now in its second season, the Los Alamos U12 Girls hockey team has improved substantially over its inaugural season. This group of 16 girls will face Gunnison at home Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 11 and 12.

In the 2010-11 season, the Los Alamos Hockey Association formed this team comprised of girls ages 12 and under. The team was young, drawing from three different hockey age groups to roster enough girls to play.
