Waterman’s Wild Ride Off Main Hill Road

The date was Dec. 30, 1968. Roger Waterman was driving his good friend, Mike Benziger, down the main hill road, heading to Benziger’s home in Santa Fe, after both had been playing basketball in Los Alamos. 

Waterman was driving his large and powerful 1959 Pontiac Starchief. He had driven the Starchief 25 times on cross-county trips to and from Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., where he was a senior classman.

Los Alamos Geological Society Meets at 6 p.m. June 19

In the facinating world of geology, one never knows what lurks under the next rock or just inside an abandoned silver mine. Geologist Javier Garcia-Guinea put his head inside an opening of an old silver mine in Almeria, Andalusia, Spain in June 2000 and found a gigantic geode, covered with large crystals of gypsum of exceptional transparency. ‘Julie’s Helpers’ Hosts Scholarship Event with Navajo Frybread and Tacos at Ashley Pond Friday

The community is invited to enjoy authentic Navajo frybread and Navajo tacos at the second annual Julie’s Helpers Memorial Scholarship Navajo Taco Sale.

The event is set for 5-9 p.m., Friday June 15 at Ashley Pond in conjunction with the Gordon’s Summer Concert and kickoff of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

Julie’s Helpers Memorial Scholarship Navajo partners will prepare the Navajo frybread and Navajo tacos for the event. All proceeds benefit the scholarship fund.

Los Alamos Elks Lodge Invites Community to Special Flag Day Event at 6 p.m. Thursday

The Los Alamos Elks Lodge is hosting a Flag Day Ceremony at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 14 at the Elks Lodge on Trinity Drive next to Sonic. The event includes a talk on the history of the American flag, a flag folding demonstration and instruction on the proper way to dispose of a flag, with a flag burning ceremony to follow. Golf Course Dedication Ceremony Honors Ed Griggs

All the carts are loaded and ready to go at the start of the tournament. At the go signal everyone goes dashing off to their assigned tee – the official start is called a “shotgun” start, which is now a horn blast. The Ed Griggs Memorial Strong Kids Classic held at the Los Alamos Golf Course Saturday honors noted golfer Ed Griggs who passed away last year. He played his final round of golf in the Strong Kids Classic tournament last year. It is the second major fundraiser of the year for the Los Alamos Family YMCA. There were 28 foursome teams entered in the best ball scramble tournament.

Caldera Work Party Helps Calves Stay with Herd

A work party coming from the visitor center and another from the highway are separated by elk herd as Saturday’s fence tear-down endeavor got underway at the Valle Caldera National Preserve. Forty people from Los Alamos, Santa Fe, Taos and Albuquerque with organizations including Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC), Sierra Club, Wild Earth Guardians and the New Mexico Environment Department joined Caldera Chief Scientist Bob Parmenter to remove fences built for sheep in the 1930s. PEEC Offers Free Hike to Guaje Overlook

Today, June 10, Paul Arendt will lead a hike for PEEC to the Guaje Overlook. Hikers will meet at PEEC at 9 a.m. to carpool to the ski area for the hike of about 8 miles round-trip. 

Participants should bring a lunch and water, and dogs are welcome.

The Guaje Overlook hike goes through the beautiful Cañada Bonita area and beyond, offering views into the Valle De Los Posos, as well as pleasant, wooded trails.
