Filippenko will deliver 42nd Oppenheimer Memorial Lecture

OPPENHEIMER MEMORIAL LECTURE News:

Award-winning UC Berkeley astrophysicist Alex Filippenko will deliver the 42nd Oppenheimer Memorial Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20, in the Duane Smith Auditorium in Los Alamos.

The lecture, “Dark Energy and the Runaway Universe,” is free and open to the public.

Filippenko has made a career of studying supernovae and using these cosmic beacons to probe the vastness of space.

Filippenko was a member of two independent teams that in 1998 reported, based on observations of supernovae, that the universe was expanding at a runaway pace.

TOTH’s ‘Pie in the Sky’ Fundraiser Exceeds $500

Lisa Rothrock and Bill Hamilton check out homemade pies in the silent auction during Thursday’s “Pie in the Sky” fundraising dinner at Trinity on the Hill Episcopal Church. The event was tied to the church’s annual Vacation Bible School underway this week. The dinner consisted of homemade chicken and vegetable pot pies and salad, with ice cream for dessert. UK Soccer Camp for ages 4-16 is July 30-Aug. 3.

The six-week season for Fall YMCA KinderKick Soccer for ages 3-4 and 5-6 starts Aug 27.

The 4 on 4 Indoor Soccer Tournament for youth (10-14), high school and adult divisions runs July 21-22.

Large Sunflower Blooms in White Rock

This large sunflower was seen shining brightly in a White Rock neighborhood Wednesday. The sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an annual plant native to the Americas. It possesses a large inflorescence (flowering head). The sunflower is named for its ability to follow the sun in the course of a day. The sunflower has a rough, hairy stem, broad, coarsely toothed, rough leaves and circular heads of flowers. The heads consist of many individual flowers, which mature into seeds, often in the hundreds, on a receptacle base. Families packed into the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) Tuesday to see a fascinating program about arthropods “bugs” including spiders, scorpions, beetles and more. It was given by The Harrell House of Natural Oddities, a traveling educational program, which local resident Linda Hull, at left, read about and then suggested to PEEC’s Becky Shankland.
