IT IS THE CLOTHES THAT MAKE THE MAN

We were looking at pictures of Adam’s first steps a few years ago, when Terry pointed to me in the picture.

“David, you still have that sweater in the closet. Let me tell you something only a friend would say: After 14 years in the closet, that argyle sweater has got to go.”

‘You are not my friend, honey, you are my wife.’ As you might imagine, the conversation went south from there.

To say that I have a love affair with clothes is not quite accurate. It is more like a codependent relationship. Read More

Security: Two-Factor Authentication

The risk of having an online account breached is increasing every day as cybercriminals continue to evolve and refine their methods.

Simply having a user ID and password as an authentication method is no longer enough to truly protect your account.

You need a form of two-factor authentication. What is two-factor authentication? Two-factor authentication requires more information than something you know, such as a password.

It adds the additional criteria of something you must have. For example, the second form of authentication Read More

Asterman’s Movie Reviews: Wreck-It Ralph, Twilight V – Breaking Dawn Part 2 and Skyfall

The Deal Down Movie Reviews by Rick Asterman

Wreck-It Ralph

+1

Advisory – Since the film stars Sarah Silverman, obviously there are jokes geared for the parents, but parents need not worry, as each one is carefully crafted to miss the impressionable minds.

The kids will likely be far more scared of the insect monsters, but every good kid’s story has a few things to send the shivers.

It’s downright strange to think a Disney-video game crossover film tapped into my heart more deeply than Pixar’s Celtic phase.

Video game related movies have a worse

Diversity or Multiculturalism – It’s All About Working With Differences

Diversity or multiculturalism is not a goal; it’s a process.

A process of working with differences; a process that has always existed although without a name until recently; a process that will continue to exist for the next millennium.

Race and gender were some of the first-noted categories, but now more and more groups have been added to the list.

Like research on leadership, research on diversity and multiculturalism has been abundant, and abundantly described in books, Read More

Column: Insecurity with LANL Security Project

ON THE MESA FACING NORTH

By Greg Kendall

When news broke out a few months ago that an 80-year-old nun and two retiree peace activist had defeated our nation's highest level security systems at the Y-12 site in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and had spent a leisurely evening throwing blood on the walls of a building that houses nuclear weapon components, I was glad that it had not happened here in Los Alamos.

Los Alamos security had to be better – much better than the apparent joke that is security at Y-12, I thought to myself. I have now had to re-evaluate that thought.

Column: Analytical Failures in the 2012 Election Results with Implications for Other Topics of Importance

Thoughts from a – hopefully – Enlightened Skeptic
By Ralph E. Chapman

To listen to the pundits before the election you would think that anything could have happened last Tuesday when we all went to the polls.

The mainstream media was emphasizing just how close the election was going to be and that Mr. Obama was potentially in grave danger of becoming a one-term president.

If you listened to the conservative pundits you were assured that good, as they define it, would win out over evil; some suggested it would be a rout with Gov. Romney getting over 300 electoral votes.

As an aside, I find it interesting Read More

Hannemann’s Music Corner

Welcome – Practice

Welcome to a variety of columns on Music. Not entertainment, nor Happenings, nor Events, but Music.

Some columns are answers to questions people ask, and I invite you to add fuel to the fire by firing off any questions you may have.

Topics will cover the full spectrum: music history, music theory, music as a business, music performance, instrument playing tips.

Some will be short, some not so. Some will have notation (so early on will be some columns about reading notation.)

First up: Practice.

I am absurdly

On the Mesa Facing North: A Big Night for Local Democrats

ON THE MESA FACING NORTH

Column by Greg Kendall

Los Alamos Democrats celebrated election results that were very much to their liking. A group of them were seen cheering the national, state and local wins at the new Pajarito Brewpub & Grill late Tuesday night.

With Obama taking the Presidency,  Martin Heinrich taking the former senate seat of Sen. Jeff Bingaman and Ben Ray Lujan returning to the House of Representatives, the national scene gave local Democrats something big to cheer about, and they did.

In Los Alamos, Barack Obama defeated Mitt Romney, Heinrich
