DPU Transformer Inspection Begins This Week

Assessment of Electric Distribution System

Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities recently awarded a contract to JACO, Inc. to inspect transformers as part of the County’s overhead electric system assessment.

Beginning in the North Community as early as Tuesday, Feb. 19, an inspection crew will focus its effort in the Los Alamos town site over the next couple of months.

DPU Officials request customer cooperation in providing the inspection crew access to electric transformers that may be located in backyards or behind closed gates.

House Joint Memorial 19, sponsored by Rep. Gail Chasey (D-Bernalillo-18), went to the House floor for a final vote today. HJM 19, the “J. Paul Taylor Early Childhood Task Force,” honors former Rep. J. Paul Taylor of District 33. The memorial creates a task force to improve collaboration among early childhood development stakeholders, aiming to prevent child abuse and help invisible, unserved, and underserved at-risk infants and children. The joint memorial passed by a vote of 37-23.

AAUW Screens Film on Rape in the Military

AAUW News:

See “The Invisible War,” a groundbreaking investigation into what Newsweek has called “the most underreported crime in America”: the epidemic of rape in the U.S. military at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21.

The film will be shown in the Jeannette Wallace Hall (Bldg. 5) at UNM-LA by the Los Alamos branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW.)

The screening is a fundraiser for AAUW’s Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF.) Admission is $10 adults and $5 students. All proceeds will be donated to LAF.

There will be a meeting of the Los Alamos Boy Scout Museum Society at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Church, 1967 18th St.

Unauthorized proposal would hurt rural communities, cost jobs

WASHINGTON – Twenty-four senators, led by Tom Udall of New Mexico, are challenging the postmaster general’s authority to discontinue Saturday mail delivery later this year without congressional approval.

In a letter to Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe, the senators acknowledge the financial challenges the Postal Service is facing and urge him to work with Congress to address these problems through bipartisan reform, such as the Senate legislation passed last year.

Udall to Address New Mexico Legislature

STATE News:

ALBUQUERQUE – Sen. Tom Udall will address the New Mexico Legislature at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, and also make visits to Sandia National Labs and New Mexico State University.

Udall will be at the Roundhouse on President’s Day to deliver a biennial address to the New Mexico Legislature, entitled “Challenges and Opportunities.”

Tuesday, Feb. 19, he will be delivering the keynote address at the Sandia National Laboratories’ Cyber Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) open house. Following the speech, he will tour the facility for demonstrations

Saturday, Feb. 16, the Los Alamos High School Wrestling Team took the 2-4A District title for the second straight year.

LAHS won by more than 30 points over second place Capital. Bob Geyer was honored as District Coach of the Year.

As a reward for their efforts at District, all LAHS Varsity wrestlers qualified for State.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich Friday reintroduced legislation to expand job training and educational opportunities for youth, while helping repair and restore the country’s public lands.

The Public Lands Service Corps Act of 2013 improves on the existing Public Lands Corps by expanding the scope of projects to reflect new challenges. It would also add incentives to attract new participants, including Native Americans and veterans, that suffer from disproportionately high rates of unemployment.

Katherine (Pat) Patterson Krikorian Oct. 25, 1921–Feb. 10, 2013

Katherine (Pat) Patterson Krikorian departed this earthly realm on Sunday Feb. 10, 2013 in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Born in Oxford, Miss., Oct. 25, 1921, Pat came to “The Hill” at the tender age of 22 as one of the first 200 military personnel assigned to the Manhattan project.

She met her husband, Krik in 1946 and they were married in Los Alamos in March, 1948. Before and after the war she was a civil servant with the Federal Government working for the Departments of Agriculture and State.

Los Alamos Police Chief to Repair Health Issue

LAPD News:

Los Alamos Police Chief Wayne Torpy wanted to let the community know that he will be away from his office for about four to six weeks.

He will undergo surgery in Albuquerque Tuesday to repair damage to a heart valve caused from an infection for which he was treated several weeks ago.

“Our Emergency Management Coordinator Phil Taylor will be acting chief in my absence,” Torpy said. “I look forward to getting this issue taken care of and returning to work as soon as I’ve recovered.
