Amber and Erin Rogers are Scenic Roots. These sisters perform original and traditional Ozark, Appalachian, and Celtic music on mountain dulcimer, fiddle and clawhammer banjo.
Scenic Roots will be in Los Alamos at 7 p.m. Monday, June 10, for a concert at Morning Glory Bakery. This show is part of the sister duo’s nine-state spring 2013 concert tour. Both sisters have degrees in commercial music from the renowned bluegrass program at South Plains College.

Camp Program Prepares Ranchers of Tomorrow
New Mexico State University’s Cooperative Extension Service has gathered youth ages 15-19 to participate in a unique summer experience June 9-14 at the Valles Caldera National Preserve. Co-sponsors include the New Mexico Beef Council.
Approximately 30 youth from throughout the state are attending this third annual New Mexico Youth Ranch Management Camp where they will receive training in all aspects of ranch management.

The Family YMCA is taking registration for the June 22 session of its American Red Cross Infant/Child Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification course.
The course, taught by an American Red Cross certified instructor, provides training on how to respond to emergency situations, recognize the signs of a heart attack, and provide care for an infant or child who stops breathing, is choking, or whose heart stops beating. National chemistry whiz Kevin Gao has qualified to compete for one of four spots on the U.S. team bound for the 45th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), to be held this year in Moscow, Russia, July 15-24.
The announcement was made by the American Chemical Society.
Gso is a senior at Los Alamos High School. He will spend two weeks at an intensive chemistry study camp at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado and at the conclusion, the top four students will be named as members of the team.

Aspen Campus Closed for Construction

Construction has started on Aspen Elementary School. As of June 5, the entire campus will be closed to all public and staff.
As part of the classroom addition and main office remodel, LAPS has deemed the campus closed. This is for the safety and welfare of the public and staff and includes the entire campus, building, parking lot, soccer field and playground.

Thompson Fire Erupts North of Jemez Springs

Firefighters are battling the Thompson Fire, which erupted at 2:40 p.m. today north of Jemez Springs.
The fire started on private land and has burned onto some federal forest service property.
Crews report fire is creeping along the ground with occasional tree torching. Sandoval County VFDs, USFS engines on scene. Unknown number of homes in the area have been evacuated. It is not known how many people have been evacuated from these homes.
