New Mexico Counties Awards $236K In Wildfire Grant Funds

SANTA FE — New Mexico Counties has awarded more than $236,000 to 12 grant recipients for community wildfire protection plan updates, fuel reduction treatments, and education efforts through the 2020-2021 Wildfire Risk Reduction Grant Program.

Grant recipients include Ciudad Soil & Water Conservation District, Curry County, Grant County, San Cristobal Neighborhood Association, San Juan County, Socorro County, South Central Mountain RC&D Council, Taos County and Wildfire Network.

New Mexico Counties Executive Director Steve Kopelman stated that “wildfire awareness and prevention is a priority for New Mexico’s communities, and during these uncertain times, it is an extremely important program.”

The Wildfire Risk Reduction Program provides assistance to local governments, tribal entities, and non-profits throughout New Mexico’s at-risk communities. Through a partnership with the Bureau of Land Management, NMC has awarded more than $6 million in grants since 2005.

The collaborative vetting process includes Forest Stewards Guild, NM Municipal League, NM State Land Office, NM Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department Forestry Division, NM Department of Agriculture, NM Department of Game and Fish, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
