County DWI Planning Council Meets May 16

The Los Alamos County DWI Planning Council will hold a meeting at 8:30 a.m., May 16 in the Los Alamos Police Department Training Room, 2500 Trinity Dr., Ste. A.

MainStreet Shopping Survey Ends Friday

­Los Alamos MainStreet is conducting an online shopping and dining survey to collect information to help local merchants and dining establishments to better understand the preferences, wants and needs of local shoppers.

The LAHS Hilltalkers would like to invite the public to their all-you-can-eat Waffle Breakfast 7:30-10 a.m., Saturday May 11 at Pajarito Mason Lodge, 15th Street and Canyon Road in Los Alamos.

The early social history of Los Alamos during Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Manhattan Project beginnings will be discussed at a talk by Jon Hunner at 5:30 p.m., May 8 at the Laboratory’s Bradbury Science Museum.

The talk is part of the Laboratory’s 70th anniversary lecture series.

If you love baseball and softball and are looking for a way to become involved in youth sports but don’t have the time to commit to coaching a team, umpiring may be the perfect way to volunteer for White Rock Little League.

 

Every Minor A, Major, Junior and Senior game requires two umpires, so there are plenty of opportunities to call a game.

The typical time commitment for an umpire is 30 minutes prior to the game time until approximately 10 minutes after game time. (Average game time is two hours.) You can call as many or as few games as you like.

Ahead of Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, U.S. Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., and U.S. Reps. Ed Whitfield, R-Ken., and Joe Pitts, R-Penn., revealed draft legislation they intend to introduce to end doping in horseracing and kick cheaters out of the sport.

 
The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act would provide the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) with authority to cleanup the sport and enforce anti-doping standards in races with simulcast wagering.

School Board to Meet Saturday

The Los Alamos School Board has scheduled an Executive Session at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Town Hall in White Rock to discuss certified and classified negotiations of the collective bargaining agreements per Section 10-15-1-H(5) of the Open Meetings Act.

Arts and Crafts Fair Just in Time for Mother’s Day

The Los Alamos Arts Council’s Spring Arts and Craft Fair has been a tradition in Los Alamos for nearly 50 years.

While this year’s arts and craft’s fair will feature the staples, including nearly 100 booths featuring everything from paintings and photography to jewelry and sculptures, as well as live entertainment by Sol y Luna and the Lads of Enchantment, there are a few new additions to the event.

Everyone can walk away with something from the fair, which is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Fuller Lodge.

Council Passes Open Meetings Resolution for 2013

COUNTY News:

At Tuesday night’s County Council meeting, the Council took action to pass a new Open Meetings Resolution, based on changes that came from actions made at the State level.

The updated resolution now includes a provision that requires a minimum of 72 hours notice for regular meetings, not only for Council, but for all Boards and Commissions as well.

This Resolution also complies with requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act; specifically, it requires that information helpful to individuals with disabilities be included in the notice of public meetings.

UNM junior center Alex Kirk of Los Alamos has been invited to tryout for the the USA Basketball Men’s World University Games team that will compete July 7-16 in Kazan, Russia. Tryouts start June 24 in Colorado Springs.
