Udall Backs Bill to Reform Surveillance Program

U.S. SENATE News:

WASHINGTON – Friday, U.S. Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., announced his support for a new bipartisan bill to reform the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) and ensure Americans’ rights to free speech and freedom from unreasonable searches are protected.

“The National Security Agency’s mission is to protect our nation from foreign threats, and I support that goal, but it is becoming clear that millions of Americans’ communications are being swept up in their dragnet,” Udall said. “I have been concerned about the potential for abuse of these programs for years. Solo Traveler: Food
Column by SHERRY HARDAGE

For people going on a cruise, where delicious food is available all day and into the night, it’s probably better to lose weight before the trip. Foodie tours of France, Italy, and Mexico can quickly pack on the pounds, too.

Even adventure travel can do in a diet. Several summers ago I went on a five-day rafting trip down the wild Yampa River in Colorado with the O.A.R.S. Company. In spite of days paddling the river and strenuous hiking, I still gained some weight Read More

Sustainability Tip: Reuse Paper to Create Notepads

Weekly Sustainability Tip:

Reuse Paper to Create Notepads

Most of us have a lot of paper sitting around the house or the office that only has text printed on one side. One option is to throw it into the recycling bin, but that paper still has one entire blank side begging to be used.

So Instead of recycling this paper, go one step further up the waste management hierarchy and reuse it. With a pair of scissors and a stapler you can create a notepad of scratch paper for all your to-do lists. Then once both sides of the paper have been used, pitch it into the recycling bin.

By reusing and recycling

How the Hen House Turns: What is Wild? Thinking of Mr. Peacock

How the Hen House Turns: What is Wild? Thinking of Mr. Peacock
Column by Carolyn A. (Cary) Neeper, Ph. D.

Mr. Peacock wasn’t very wild. He would not let me approach, though he was very young, but he obviously wanted to be in the Hen House pen with the other birds. Every day, when he came over from the neighbor’s yard, he would wait on the Hen House roof until I filled the water troughs and put out the lay pellets and corn. Then he would hop down and play the “shy new kid on the block” for the day.

So what does wild mean? Number one in my dog-eared American Heritage Dictionary says it means, “occurring, Read More

Expert Reveals Facts Behind Murders in ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’

Robert Hull of Los Alamos Technical Associates enlightened the Rotary Club of Los Alamos on poisons Tuesday, specifically those used in ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’, the murder comedy playing at the Los Alamos Little Theatre. The play was based on an actual series of murders performed by Amy Archer-Gilligan on at least 20 victims at her convalescent home, Hull said. The recipe used by the Brewster sisters in the play, arsenic, strychnine, and ‘just a pinch’ of cyanide in elderberry wine would indeed have caused the demise of the victims, but not in the nearly instantaneous

The Military Pay Protection Act, which is based on a similar proposal introduced in January, would ensure the nation’s military families, including National Guard units assisting in disaster recovery, and critical Defense Department civilian workers, would not see a delay in their paychecks if the government were to shut down.
