The National Weather Service in Albuquerque reports that a potent upper level disturbance is bringing accumulating snow to the higher terrain, then jet stream to strengthen and bring strong and potentially damaging winds.

Valles Caldera Modifies Hunt Lotteries

JEMEZ SPRINGS – The Valles Caldera Trust has made dramatic changes to its elk and turkey hunt lotteries, which are expected to deepen the pool of applicants during these difficult economic times.

The Trust will combine a reduction in lottery application fees with a one ticket per hunt code purchase limit to attract more participants. The Trust will also eliminate multiple-ticket discount purchases. The changes are effective immediately and will apply to the 2014 hunting seasons.

County Council Reviewing Strategic Goals Today

The Los Alamos County Council is meeting in a special session this morning to review its strategic goals. Councilors are discussing grouping existing items adopted back in 2011 under three broad categories: Quality of Life, Economic Vitality and Quality Governance. They feel having three categories of focus instead of the current 10 areas, makes it easier to communicate goals to County staff and the community. The posting of mugshots and names from the Police Beat (Los Alamos Police Blotter) and Local Courts Docket in the Los Alamos Monitor and Los Alamos Daily Post should be stopped.

Although we should all be aware of crime in our community, we do not need to list the names and post images of every person suspected of a crime or involved in a traffic violation. Many of these people may be found not guilty later, and these listings will be searchable for years to come.

This could affect future careers, especially of young people, as colleges are now performing internet searches

Los Alamos County Administrator Harry Burgess told the Los Alamos Daily Post in an email Thursday that the County has granted a one-year extension on the contract for a branding initiative study for Los Alamos.

Recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Argus II will help people blinded by the rare hereditary disease retinitis pigmentosa or seniors suffering from severe macular degeneration—diseases that destroy the light-­sensing cell in the retina. Mesa Public Library Art Gallery presents seventy remarkable photographic portraits by Don Usner of participants in the Lannan Foundation’s Readings and Conversations literary series of the last 15 years. All the portraits are black and white and eloquently reveal the personality of each author.
