Los Alamos County Administrator Harry Burgess just announced that he is eliminating the “Assistant to the County Administrator” position held by Brian Bosshardt. He has moved Bosshardt into one of two assistant county administrator positions. The community is invited to the Ribbon Cutting/Rededication of Griffith Gymnasium at 6 p.m. Monday, April 23.
Griffith Gym is named after 1st Lt. Thurston “Turk” Griffith, Jr., a 1958 graduate of Los Alamos High School.
“Turk” was awarded posthumously by General William Westmoreland the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, The Purple Heart, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
In December of 1964 “Turk” was assigned to the Military Assistance Command in Vietnam.
He served as an adviser to units of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam in Binh Tuy Province.

An emotionally charged emergency-response exercise involving a staged crash in which five students were injured and a sixth student died at the scene took place this morning at Los Alamos High School.

Today Marks Date Women Begin to Catch up to What Men Made Last Year

April 17 is the symbolic day this year when women will on average catch up with the amount men made in the previous year.
New statistics out this month show that New Mexico’s women make on average 77 percent of what our men make.
Forty years after the Women’s Movement of the early ‘70s, it is hard to imagine that this gender pay gap continues.
More women work outside the home than 40 years ago; more women attend college than 40 years ago; more women are the only wage earner for themselves and their family than 40 years ago.

More than 200 New Mexico students and their teachers will convene at Los Alamos National Laboratory April 23 and 24 for judging and the awards ceremony in the 22nd annual New Mexico Supercomputing Challenge.

Los Alamos Youth are planning a trip to Russia this summer as part of an ongoing series of exchange visits with the Los Alamos Sister City of Sarov.

Ron Barber to Speak at Phi Beta Kappa Banquet Honoring Local High School Scholars

On Sunday evening, April 29, the Los Alamos Phi Beta Kappa Association will hold its 56th annual banquet to honor the top graduates of Los Alamos High School.
Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest undergraduate honors society in the United States and has about 275 members in Los Alamos County (1.5 percent of the county’s population.)
The banquet for the honor graduates, Phi Beta Kappa Members and their guests, will be held at 5:30 p.m. at Fuller Lodge in Los Alamos starting and will be catered by Decadent Table.
