Williams: School Funding And Taxes

By MATT WILLIAMS
Los Alamos

As vice president of the LAPS School Board I would like to present some of my very simple ideas about our taxes and how they fund our schools. If there are any errors in this writeup there are mine and mine alone, I also do not speak for the School Board. I hope the readers find this information useful.

I typically think of these taxes in three main categories:

  • Operational;
  • House Bill 33 (Referendum); and
  • Capital Reinvestment.

There are other peripheral categories, but these are the main ones. Here is a general description of these three categories:

Operational: This is Read More

An Open Book: Have I Got A Rumor For You!

An Open Book
By DAVID IZRAELEVITZ

Have I Got A Rumor For You!

One of the surprising facts I have learned as a county councilor is how quickly a rumor can take on a life of its own, especially if it involves the ever conspiratorial local government. I have decided to take the bull by the horns and start a rumor of my own, which I document below. The county has nothing to do with it, but then, that is what we would say anyway, wouldn’t it?

Letter To The Editor: Refuting Pacheco And Nunez

By EDWARD BIRNBAUM
Los Alamos

The Jan. 26 Los Alamos Daily Post report in which Representatives Pacheco and Nunez call the Republican version of Real ID legislation that passed the House Judiciary Committee a “compromise”, is disingenuous at best, and an outright lie at worst.

Real “compromise” legislation was passed in the Senate 35-5 in last year’s session, with the support of almost all Democrats AND Republican’s, but was blocked by the House Republicans who never brought it up for a vote.

The fact that the legislation sponsored by Pacheco

Advanced Algorithms Used To Identify Six Botnets

Prof. Bracha Shapira

HSNW News:

Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) cyber security researchers have discovered and traced approximately six “botnets” by analyzing data collected from past cyberattacks. Botnets are networks of malicious, remotely updatable code that covertly lurk on infected computers.

Using botnets, which until now were largely untraceable, hackers and cyber criminals can carry out powerful attacks, spread viruses, generate spam, and commit other types of online crime.

Yang: NUMMI – When The Giant Stumbles…

By ELENA YANG
Los Alamos

It hurts everyone in its path.

Is it possible that all those working at NUMMI (New United Motor Manufacturing Incorporated) were happy team players? Of course not, that’d be against reality, and so not American.

However, since the dissenters were few, there was little chance of upsetting production. Ultimately, the question was: If NUMMI was such a success, wouldn’t GM want the rest of the company’s plants, or at least the majority of them, to learn (not copy) from it?

As I have explained before, changes are

Cinema Cindy Reviews ‘The Big Short’

By CYNTHIA BIDDLECOMB
Los Alamos

“The Big Short” could be the most important film of 2015. It exposes the risky financial under-girdings of our capitalist system where the key players, big banks, are expected to play by the rules and don’t.

Greed is the central motivator and some level of gambling is inherent. Yet our nation is dependent on this corrupt system.

The film dramatizes the 2005-2007 events leading up to the burst of the housing bubble. We lived through the foreclosures and the bank losses, the market failures and government bailouts. But do we really understand

Letter To The Editor: Dumb

By ROY M. MOORE
Los Alamos

I’ve never seen the movie Dumb and Dumber, but when I saw Sara the ImPaler and McDonald T Rump touting that God and guns go together, all I could think of was dumb and dumber.

The problem is, I’m not sure who is dumb and who is dumber. Can anyone imagine Jesus with an M-16? What is wrong with our society that we appreciate the worst of humanity? Why isn’t there a smart and smarter? Why does Albuquerque worship Breaking Bad? Why wouldn’t they want to be known as Going Good? How is it that hatred of all things different is pushing Mr. T Rump to
