Council Approves Changes To Financial Policies

County Council voted 4-3 this evening to approve financial policy changes to the general fund, including dropping general fund reserves to 20 percent from 25 percent, moving the warning for reserves to 15 percent and consolidating those funds into one fund. Councilors James Chrobocinski, David Izraelevitz, Pete Sheehey and Chair Rick Reiss voted for the measure. Council also approved 7-0 a general fund move of $1 million to the Economic Development Fund and $500,000 to the Capital Improvement Project fund. Council Approves Change To Assessor’s Office Budget

Deputy County Manager Steven Lynne and Budget and Performance Manager Karen Kendall brief Council this evening on the Los Alamos County’s FY 2017 proposed budget. Council voted 7-0 to approve the removal of $45,000 in incentive pay and $9,989 in associated benefits from the Assessor’s Office proposed FY 2017 budget and revisit it at the end of the year. This will allow staff time to review salary structure details. Mark Bjorklund was the top predictor in the weekly pace race held in the Western Area with a 18 second differential. Other accurate predictors were: Burton Krohn at 27 seconds off, and Allison Chan and Georgia Pedicini tying at 34 seconds.
 
On the 1 mile course Billy Strother was the first finisher at 9:47 and his sister Savanna Strother was the top female recording a 10:09. Ryan Smeltzer had 25:54 for top finisher in the 3 mile race and Roxana Candia was the first female with a time of 27:56.

State Police Arrest Drunk Driver For 10th DWI

ESPANOLA Around 8:30 p.m., April 26 a New Mexico State Police officer stopped a vehicle for multiple traffic violations on State Road 74 in Chamita.  
 
The driver of the vehicle, identified as Max Padilla, 38, of Espanola, emitted a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage and exhibited numerous signs of impairment. Padilla admitted to the officer that prior to the stop he consumed vodka and had ingested heroin.

LAHS Senior Eric Burnside Achieves Eagle Scout Rank

Eric Burnside, a senior at Los Alamos High School and member of Troop 222, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Boy Scouts of America. This accomplishment represents several years of hard work, fun, adventure and community service. Nathanael Farnham, age 58, a resident of Los Alamos, passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2016.

Mr. Farnham was preceded in death by his mother, Maureen Farnham. Nathanael was known to his family as a hard worker who pursued his education in a field he loved and later retired from, Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Carlos Valdez Leads Rose Pruning Workshop May 7

GARDEN News:

Carlos Valdez from the Los Alamos County Cooperative Extension Services Department will conduct a workshop about the care and pruning of roses at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 7 in the Memorial Rose Garden behind Fuller Lodge.

Valdez will demonstrate pruning techniques and answer questions about growing roses in the local environment.

Attendees are encouraged to wear long sleeves and bring pruning shears and gloves. Get hands-on experience helping the Los Alamos Garden Club prune the roses in the Memorial Rose Garden.
