Sangre de Cristo Chorale: ‘Night Songs’ This Weekend

The Sangre de Cristo Chorale will cap its 39th season with performances on April 29 in Santa Fe and April 30 in Los Alamos with Night Songs. This concert features works inspired by the night … of lovers finding their heart’s desire or heartbreak … of being enveloped by twinkling stars, lush scents and reflection. At the Los Alamos concert, graduating seniors who are winners of the chorale’s Hastings Smith Memorial Vocal Scholarship will be announced.

Bandelier Seeks Summer Youth Work Crew Applicants

For several summers, crews of young people have done valuable service for Bandelier National Monument, working on trails, archeological sites, and other projects. 
 
The Bandelier Conservation Corps and the Bandelier Preservation Corps are organized through the Rocky Mountain Youth Corps and supervised by park staff. Both crews are now seeking applicants for this summer.

Star Workshop And Phantoms At Planetarium

The Los Alamos Nature Center is ending the month with a star workshop at 7 p.m. Friday, April 28 and an exciting astronomy film Phantom of the Universe at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 29 and 30.
 
The Friday star workshop is a family-friendly two-hour program that starts by charting the major constellations in the planetarium. While it may not be quite saint-hood, it is close! There is a way we can celebrate all the good that Russ Gordon has done for the community and for the music he brings to us. He has been a moving force in more than music, but that is how many of us know him. Maybe you even remember his store as being a safe place for kids to hang out when it was located in White Rock.
 
I have nominated Russ Gordon to be named a Los Alamos Living Treasure. I recently learned that back-up letters of recommendation are needed to even consider a nomination.

The Los Alamos Concert Association has engaged a rising young star, pianist Natasha Paremski, to replace Ingrid Fliter who has regretfully cancelled her performance May 7 for family reasons.
 
Ms. Paremski’s program will include Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, Brahms’ Variations on a Theme by Paganini and three mazurkas and the Scherzo No. 4 in E Major, Op. 54 by Chopin.

SANTA FE  For the second weekend in a row, irresponsible campers left multiple unattended and abandoned campfires on the Jemez Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF). 
 
Luckily, 11 still-burning campfires were discovered and extinguished before they could spark or spread.
 
But with the fire danger level on the SFNF at HIGH and most of northern and central New Mexico under a fire weather watch, it takes very little for a campfire to become a human-caused wildfire, putting lives and property at unnecessary risk.

DPU Kicks Off Customer Survey

Officials with the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities are encouraging customers to devote 10 minutes to rate the DPU’s performance in providing electric, natural gas, water, and wastewater services. The seventh biennial customer satisfaction survey is kicking off this week.

An independent firm, Southwest Planning & Marketing is conducting a phone survey with some online options. Data from DPU’s residential and commercial customers will be compiled, interpreted and presented in a report.
