CAIR Commends Albq. Bill Condemning Anti-Asian Hate

CAIR News:

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the passage of bills expanding language services for non-English speakers and condemning anti-Asian hate in Albuquerque.

Dec. 27, Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller signed a language access bill designed to make information and services more accessible to all city residents regardless of the language they speak.

He also signed a bill that recognizes and condemns the spike in anti-Asian hate crimes and encourages the city to create partnerships to protect the Asian-American community, make mental health resources available to victims, and record and investigate anti-Asian incidents.

“Racial hate and division are on the rise nationwide, and it is essential that leaders take steps like these to combat bigotry,” CAIR National Communications Coordinator Ismail Allison said. “We welcome the city of Albuquerque’s efforts to provide support to members of minority communities and urge cities nationwide to do the same.”

Allison noted that CAIR recently welcomed the identification of a suspect in an arson targeting an Albuquerque mosque and called on authorities to pursue hate crime charges.

He said the American Muslim community and CAIR stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
