Bill Provides First In Nation Funding Mechanism

SANTA FE  House Bill 536 was chaptered into law last week, creating a first-in-the-nation mechanism to allow New Mexicans to donate a portion of their tax returns to pay for the testing of sexual assault evidence kits in the state.
 
According to the Office of the State Auditor, as of November 2016, there is an estimated backlog of 5,400 untested rape kits throughout the state of New Mexico. Testing each kit costs as much as $1,000, money which the state and some municipal governments do not have enough of to address their backlog.

Sixty Plein Air Artists Draw Beauty Of Jemez Springs

Sixty artists will be plein air painting April 28–May 4 throughout the Jemez Valley.

Those works will then be exhibited at Jemez Springs Fine Art Gallery commencing with an artists reception 1-3 p.m., May 6. Paintings from the “Plein Air Painters of New Mexico (PAPNM) Spring Paint-Out and Show” will be exhibited at the gallery through May 24 and will be available for sale.

The art of plein air painting is making a comeback and the village of Jemez Springs is excited to host the event.

Councilor Rick Reiss suggested adding a budget option for a one-time consultant-driven study for a utility financial assessment and for funding options.
