Bradbury Science Museum Director Linda Deck is the guest speaker at the noon, Tuesday Dec. 4 meeting of the Los Alamos Kiwanis Club.

Deck will speak on the current displays at the Bradbury Science Museum.

Approximately 40 interactive exhibits trace the history of the WWII Manhattan Project, highlight Los Alamos National Laboratory’s current and historic research projects related to defense and technology, and focus on Laboratory research related to national and international economic, environmental, political, and social concerns. LAHS Trumpeter Finalist in Carnegie Hall Program

LAHS News:

Los Alamos High School trumpeter Aaron Bao has been accepted as a finalist in the honors band for the 2013 American High School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall in New York next summer.

Last June, he was selected as a member of the National Association of Music Education National Honor Ensemble and performed at the Kennedy Center.

A senior, Bao has played trumpet since fifth grade. He successfully auditioned for all-state and Southwest Honor Band in 10th and 11th grade.

Kelvin Doe, 15, is an engineering whiz living in Sierra Leone who scours trash bins for spare parts, which he uses to build batteries, generators and transmitters.

Completely self-taught, Doe has created his own radio station where he broadcasts news and plays music under the moniker, DJ Focus.

School Board Moves Projects Forward

During its regular meeting Tuesday night, the Los Alamos School Board approved hiring two companies to move projects forward in the district.

With the board’s nod to contract with Brian McPartlon Roofing, Pinon Elementary School’s roof replacement project will soon start.

Chief Financial Officer John Wolfe explained that the district received funds from the Public Schools Facilities Authority (PSFA) to rebuild a portion of the roof at the elementary school.

The Family YMCA’s American Red Cross Babysitters Course will be held Friday and Saturday, Nov. 16 and 17. Registration must be received by 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15.

Students Selling Poinsettias and Coffee to Raise Money for Summer Trip to Europe

Twenty-two area seniors who want to see the world and develop skills and global-mindedness are planning to travel to Berlin, Prague, the Alps and Paris this summer.

Educator Lynn Ovaska will lead the students on their 13-day educational trip, which includes  visiting historic Checkpoint Charlie, the concentration camp Dachau, the famous Mona Lisa and much more.
