VFW Post 8874 Commander Roger Anaya and Morrie Pongratz at last night’s event at Duane Smith Auditorium announced the winner of the Los Alamos VFW’s Post 8874 Voice of Democracy award. Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW’s) premier scholarship program. Each year, almost 40,000 high school students compete for more than $2 million in scholarships and incentives. Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. Jason W. Ott, 34, died on May 12, 2016, of injuries suffered in an accident in Arizona.

Jason was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on May 4, 1982 and was a 2001 graduate of Los Alamos High School. Jason is survived by his mother, Kathleen Veenstra and partner Grady Stem; his father Will Ott and wife Cindy; his sister Julia Toler, husband Josh, and Jason’s adored nieces and nephews Ava, Grey, Griffin, Norah and Ingrid; his sister Emily Veenstra-Ott and fiancé Kevin O’Neal; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
