‘Julie’s Helpers’ Hosts Scholarship Event with Navajo Frybread and Tacos at Ashley Pond Friday

The community is invited to enjoy authentic Navajo frybread and Navajo tacos at the second annual Julie’s Helpers Memorial Scholarship Navajo Taco Sale.

The event is set for 5-9 p.m., Friday June 15 at Ashley Pond in conjunction with the Gordon’s Summer Concert and kickoff of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

Julie’s Helpers Memorial Scholarship Navajo partners will prepare the Navajo frybread and Navajo tacos for the event. All proceeds benefit the scholarship fund.

Little Bear Fire Consumes Nearly 35,000 Acres

The Little Bear Fire sparked by lightning June 4 near Ruidoso in the Smokey Bear Ranger District, Lincoln National Forest remains o percent contained.

The massive blaze has burned some 34,651 acres of mixed conifer and ponderosa pine and destroyed about 35 structures as of this morning.

There are currently eight Type 1 and Type 2 crews comprised of 429 firefighters battling this inferno with 47 fire engines, seven water tenders, five dozers and two Type 1 helicopters.

Los Alamos Elks Lodge Invites Community to Special Flag Day Event at 6 p.m. Thursday

The Los Alamos Elks Lodge is hosting a Flag Day Ceremony at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 14 at the Elks Lodge on Trinity Drive next to Sonic. The event includes a talk on the history of the American flag, a flag folding demonstration and instruction on the proper way to dispose of a flag, with a flag burning ceremony to follow. School Board to Hold Executive Session at 5 p.m. Tuesday Followed Immediately by Regular Meeting

The Los Alamos School Board has scheduled an Executive Session for 5 p.m., Tuesday June 12 at Los Alamos High School.

The stated purpose of the closed session is to discuss Superintendent Gene Schmidt’s employment contract.

The board also is scheduled to discuss “limited personnel meetings involving recent personnel decisions.”

Following the Executive Session, the board will meet at 5:30 p.m. in regular session in the Los Alamos High School Speech Theater.
