Bandelier Offers National Park Week Activities in Los Alamos

National Park Week runs through April 29 and Bandelier National Monument is offering opportunities both in Los Alamos and at the park to celebrate National Park Week.
“Bandelier partners with many organizations in Los Alamos. We’re very happy to be able to offer National Park Week activities in town where they are available to people who may not be able to get down to the park,” Park Superintendent Jason Lott said. “We hope to see lots of our neighbors this week.” Read More
Vehicle Plows into McDonalds
A vehicle crashed into the front wall of McDonald’s at 1247 Trinity Dr. this morning. People were sitting at tables eating on the other side of the wall where the impact occurred. Employees said no one was injured and that they believe the 95-year-old driver was parked and he inadvertently put the car in drive rather than reverse and stepped on the accelerator when attempting to leave the restaurant. Testifying before the House Energy and Commerce Oversight and Investigation Subcommittee at a hearing on “Budget and Spending Concerns at DOE” last Thursday, April 18, DOE Inspector General Gregory H. Friedman reiterated his office’s recommendation that DOE consider:
- (1) Closing national laboratories
- (2) Reprioritizing environmental remediation efforts, and
- (3) Reincorporating NNSA into DOE.

Renowned Scientist George Cowan Has Died

Internationally renowned scientist George A. Cowan has died.
Cowan was a scientist, philanthropist and businessman who conducted early research for the Manhattan Project and went on to found Los Alamos National Bank and the Santa Fe Institute.
Los Alamos National Laboratory issued the following statement today on the death of the Laboratory’s Senior Fellow.

Bandelier National Monument Seeks Public Input on Management of Tsankawi Unit

Bandelier National Monument has announced that the park is initiating a 30-day scoping period, from April 16, 2012 to May 15, 2012, as part of planning to improve resource protection and visitor understanding of the unique Tsankawi Unit.
