Active Duty U.S. Military Offered Free Entrance to All National Parks Beginning Saturday
BANDELIER News:
The National Park Service has announced that on Saturday May 19, which is Armed Forces Day, it will begin issuing an annual pass offering free entrance to all 397
National Park Service areas for active duty military members and their dependents.
This military version of the America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass also permits free entrance to sites managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Reclamation, and the U.S. Forest Service.
The pass is available at these locations as well.

GOP Elects Delegates to Quadrennial Convention
The Los Alamos County GOP held its Quadrennial County Convention Thursday evening at the Los Alamos VFW.
The purpose of the County Quadrennial Convention was to elect delegates to the Republican Party of New Mexico Quadrennial Convention to be held June 9 in Albuquerque.
The State Convention will elect delegates to the National GOP Convention in Tampa, Fla.

Public invited to PEEC/Pajarito Astronomers Annular Eclipse Event Sunday at Overlook
PEEC News:
One projecting telescope, four viewing telescopes with solar filters and 100 eclipse-viewing glasses will be available at Sunday’s big Annular Eclipse Event at Overlook Park in White Rock.
The Pajarito Astronomers and Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) are sponsoring the event and will assist people who choose to make simple pinhole viewers at the park. People who have their own telescopes with solar filters are welcome to bring them to view the eclipse.

During a preliminary hearing Wednesday in Magistrate Court, Judge Pat Casados found probable cause that Tyrell Abney of Los Alamos committed the crime of child abuse in the first degree last month against his infant son.
Abney, 18, faces a mandatory 18 years in prison if convicted.

15th Annual Los Alamos Kite Festival Begins Friday
Giant Chess Match Set for Saturday
From 4-7 p.m., Saturday May 19, Mario will take on the Ringling Brother’s Circus in an oversized chess match like no other. Students in the 2-d/3-d and ceramics/sculpture classes have created oversized chess pieces out of paper mache. These pieces range in size from 7-feet tall to 4-feet tall. The chessboard is 24-feet by 24-feet. The two chess matches played by the district chess clubs, will take place at the auxiliary gym at Los Alamos High School. Deputy County Administrator Steve Lynne and Capital Projects & Facilities Director Anne Laurent count the votes from the seven Councilors as to how they ranked the CIP projects under consideration for funding this evening. Council has unanamously approved the $2,226,471 Ashley Pond Improvement Project, the $4 million Teen Center, the $4.3 million Nature Center, the $655,000 Eastern Area Sound Wall, the $500,000 Canyon Rim Trail, the $1.5 million Ice Rink Improvements Project and to retain $800,000 in a contingency fund.
