Chimayo Fire Update
New Mexico State Forestry Division spokesperson Dan Ware said that while there are no active flames in the Chimayo Fire, an evacuation order remains in place as a precaution for Chimayo and the surrounding communities because flames could flare up overnight.
Should that happen, evacuees are advised to go to the Espanola Stroke and Rehabilitation Center at 735 Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Park Road.
The brush fire began about 6 p.m. today and burned along N.M. 76 near Chimayo. It has consumed 20 acres, Ware said.

About 50 firefighters are battling a 20-acre brush fire burning near N.M. 76 close to Chimayo.
“I don’t know specifically if the Sancuario is threatened but if it is, we’ll have structure protection in place,” said spokesman Dan Ware of the New Mexico State Forestry Division. “About 45 minutes ago (7:30 p.m.) crews were getting a handle on the fire – it’s not contained by any means – but they are starting to get it under control.”

Donna Schroeder has told the Los Alamos Daily Post today that she has retired from her position as executive director of the United Way of Northern New Mexico.
“I’ve been here almost six years and I’ve seen a lot of changes and a lot of things happen during that time,” Schroeder said. “My dream was to put 2-1-1 in Los Alamos and that has been accomplished. Also, my mother is 92 years old and lives in North Carolina and she is having some challenges and I really don’t want to be this for away from her now.”

DOD Selects Los Alamos Police Department for Recognition as a ‘Patriotic Employer’

The Los Alamos Police Department has been selected by the Department of Defense as a “Patriotic Employer.”
The chair of the local Employer Support for the Guard & Reserve will present the award to the local police during Tuesday’s County Council meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers.
ESGR is a Department of Defense sponsored program to help guard and reserve members and to honor employers who do the same.

Steel Starts Going up Monday on Muni Complex

Residents and commuters can now see a large crane being constructed on the Municipal Complex building site.
The crane is being used to set the steel beams into place when framing of the building begins Monday.

The Los Alamos County Planning and Zoning Commission approved a site plan for a Smith’s fuel center to be built at the existing Shamrock gas station site at 1239 Trinity Dr.
Smith’s will lease the property at the corner of Trinity Drive and Knecht Street from Polk JT Properties.
Smith’s new fuel center will be adjacent to the Smith’s Marketplace store in Trinity Place.
The new fuel center will allow Smith’s reward cardholders to purchase discounted gas.

Regional Coalition Decries Funding Cuts, Calls on Congress to Restore Full Funding to Protect Jobs and the Environment

N.M. 4 Paving Falls Behind Due to Hot Mix Plant Problem
This is the back end of a machine called the “Shuttle Buggy” that has been parked at La Vista and N.M. 4. Bottom-dump semi trucks drop a line of the asphalt mix down the center of the road they are about to pave. The Shuttle Buggy comes along and scoops the asphalt up, mixes it, and deposits the prepared asphalt mix out the conveyor on the back end into the waiting maw of the paving (lay-down) machine.
