Business Leaders Advocate for LANL Budget

RDCNM News:

A delegation of New Mexico business leaders will travel to Washington D.C. July 16 and 17 to discuss the importance of Los Alamos National Laboratory to the state’s economy.

The delegation will be accompanied by Gov. Susana Martinez’ Chief of Staff Keith Gardner and Los Alamos County Council Chair Sharon Stover.

Stover is a member of the Regional Coalition of LANL Communities, which traveled to Washington, D.C., on a similar mission in March. .

Bandelier Reduces Fire Restrictions to Stage I

Bandelier National Monument Superintendent Jason Lott has announced that effective this evening, Stage II Fire Restrictions no longer apply for Bandelier National Monument.

These restrictions are reduced to Stage I in light of the increase in moisture and reduction of fire danger.

Under Stage I Fire Restrictions, smoking outside of vehicles, open campfires outside of developed campsites, and fireworks are prohibited.

Flooding Washes Away Bandelier’s Temporary Bridges

The storm that came through this area Wednesday evening brought flooding that temporarily closed N.M. 501 and sections of N.M. 4.

The new ashy-black mud along Frijoles Creek shows how high the water was running here.

The trails are open, and lots of people are visiting, but the three temporary bridges along the trail to Alcove House and the second bridge on the Falls Trail washed away – time for wet feet!

West Road Closed Today for Debris Cleanup

COUNTY News:

The Los Alamos County Public Works Department reports that Wednesday’s rain storm resulted in about a foot of water flowing through Los Alamos Canyon and the Ice Rink parking lot.

County crews had completed barrier work around the rink in June to provide protective measures to the Rink, and the barriers held up well – no water entered the Ice Rink and there is no damage to that structure.

Pavement Division Manager Tom Roach has indicated that DOE has reported they will close West Road today to allow their crews to enter and clean up road debris.

This large sunflower was seen shining brightly in a White Rock neighborhood Wednesday. The sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an annual plant native to the Americas. It possesses a large inflorescence (flowering head). The sunflower is named for its ability to follow the sun in the course of a day. The sunflower has a rough, hairy stem, broad, coarsely toothed, rough leaves and circular heads of flowers. NEA Awards Kewa Pueblo & Taos Neighborhood Revitalization Grants

 
 
WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Tom Udall announced today that Taos and the Kewa Pueblo (formerly Santo Domingo) will receive $150,000 in matching grants from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Our Town program to revitalize the local economies through the arts.
 
“The arts and humanities are an important cultural and economic driver in New Mexico,” Udall said. “These grants are designed to encourage the relationship between the arts and jobs growth, and I look forward to seeing how they will be put to use in Taos and the Kewa Pueblo.”

Los Alamos Aquatomics Meet Honors Nick Nogar

Los Alamos Aquatomics hosted the Nick Nogar Memorial Invitation Swim Meet June 23-24, at the Walkup Aquatic Center.

Swimmers from as far away as Texas were among the 175 swimmers from 11 teams who participated in the event.

This meet was dedicated to Nick Nogar, a former Los Alamos High School, University of New Mexico and U.S. Masters swimmer.

Forest Reminds Public, Be Mindful of Coyotes

The Santa Fe National Forest has heard reports of coyote confrontations on some routes located in the Santa Fe area in the past week.

Forest staff reminds residents to be alert to situations for potential wildlife conflicts and learn how to avoid them.

LANL and Sandia Scientists Collaborate with Artists

The University of New Mexico and 516 ARTS, a nonprofit art space in Downtown Albuquerque, are hosting this summer’s Scientists/Artists Research Collaborations (SARC), in conjunction with the International Symposium on Electronic Art (www.isea2012.org).

The Kiwanis Club recently recognized Los Alamos High School graduating senior Ben Schilling pictured here with from left, his mother Lori , father Scott and Kiwanis Club President Kristy Keane. Schilling is attending New Mexico Tech in Socorro this fall to study mechanical engineering. He said that he had a great school experience at LAHS and when asked to name one positive item, he stated the students and teachers.
