JEMEZ RANGER DISTRICT News:
A fire was discovered today on the Jemez Ranger District three miles west of La Cueva.
Smoke from the Cebollita Fire is visible to residents from La Cueva and Jemez Springs. Fuels on the ground are creating a fair amount of smoke.
The Cebollita Fire is at two acres and holding. An incident commander is on scene and two engines are enroute.

It sounds as though North American Development Group [NADG], the current developers for the Trinity Site, have become discouraged by the results of their attempts to secure lease agreements with other retailers and restaurants to lease the many available pads spaces planed for the Trinity Site development.
NADG seems to have become so discouraged that in fact, they are saying “adios muchachos” to the entire Trinity Site Project by requesting that it be handed over to Smith’s/Kroger. Council will discuss the request to transfer Read More

Valles Caldera Prescribed Burn Planned for Monday
VALLES CALDERA News:
The Valles Caldera Trust will implement a prescribed burn project that will begin Monday, Sept. 24 and possibly run through Wednesday, Sept. 26 if weather and associated conditions permit.
The prescribed burn will be on the Valles Caldera National Preserve, south of N.M. 4 near mile marker 30.
Because of the location and elevation, smoke from the burn will be visible from all directions coming into the Jemez Mountains area.
The burn is the final stage of a project to reduce fire hazard and improve forest health.

New White Rock Visitor Center Shines at Sunset
The White Rock Visitor Center Complex illuminated at sunset sits on approximately 5.4 acres adjacent to N.M. 4, just west of Fire Station 3. The Complex consists of three components: a 3,281 square foot Visitor Center building, a 16 space RV parking area and a transit/transfer hub. Los Alamos County Council approved a $2,197,000 budget for the project. The Certificate of Occupancy for the building was acquired Aug. 8. Los Alamos High School Football C-Team Wins Again
Coach Marco V. Lucero reports that Monday Sept. 17, the Los Alamos High School Hilltoppers Football C-team traveled to Moriarty to take on the Pintos. Despite the the fact that the Toppers lost their first string quarterback in the beginning of the third quarter, the Toppers went on to win 40-20. Cory Schramm went out with a head injury. Topper running back Marcos Vigil led all scorers with four touchdowns. Lane Saunders had two touchdowns to his credit. The defense also showed up and had tree turnovers. Lloyd Hunt gets a trim from barber Julian Ortiz at the Esquire Barber Shop in White Rock Thursday. Ortiz celebrated his 49th year barbering this month. Worried about mosquitoes and the West Nile virus lurking in the perennial puddles and soggy spots in your yard?
The Los Alamos County Parks Division has “mosquito dunks” available to the public at no cost.
The dunks are effective treatment for the elimination of mosquito larvae in standing water.

Visitors Suffer Heat Related Illness at Bandelier

Today at approximately 2:45 p.m., Bandelier National Monument rangers responded to a report of two visitors from England suffering from what appeared to be heat exhaustion at the top of Alcove House located on the Main Loop Trail in Frijoles Canyon.
Bandelier staff called the Los Alamos Fire Department Technical Rescue Team from Station 5 to assist in evacuating the couple from the top of the steep trail.

Manhattan Project National Historical Park Fails to Pass House

Earlier this afternoon, the U.S. House of Representatives failed to pass the Manhattan Project National Historical Park Resolution 5987.
A 2/3 vote was require to pass the “Yeas and Nays” vote. The Park received 257 Yeas and 158 Nays, however, 276 Yea votes were needed to pass the park through the House and on to the Senate for consideration.
H.R. 5987 is titled, “To establish the Manhattan Project National Historical Park in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Los Alamos, New Mexico, and Hanford, Washington, and for other purposes.”

LANL Reopens Trails Temporarily Closed for Environmental Sampling and Cleanup

Los Alamos National Laboratory has reopened trails located on U.S. Department of Energy property near the Timber Ridge and Ridge Park condominiums south of Trinity Drive near Oppenheimer Drive.
The trails were closed temporarily while the Laboratory conducted environmental sampling and cleanup work in the area, which is south of Trinity Drive and west of Oppenheimer Drive.
