Winter Weather Preparedness Tips

COUNTY News:
BEFORE the storm:
- Be familiar with winter storm warning messages.
- Service snow removal equipment and have rock salt on hand to melt ice on walkways and kitty litter to generate temporary traction.
- Make sure you have sufficient heating fuel; regular fuel sources may be cut off.
Winterize your home:
- Insulate walls and attic.
- Caulk and weather-strip doors and windows.
- Install storm windows or cover windows with plastic from the inside.
Have safe emergency heating equipment available:
- Fireplace with ample supply of wood.
- Small, well-vented, wood, coal, or camp stove

COUNTY News:
The Los Alamos County Council will hold a closed session from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27 in the conference room of the Community Building at 20th Street and Central Avenue.
The Council will follow the closed session with a regular meeting at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers that is open to the media and public.
Also, pursuant to a request from Council, the previously scheduled Dec. 11 Council Work Session in White Rock has been changed to be a Regular Council Meeting in Council Chambers at the Community Building in Los Alamos. Council has requested that this meeting be televised. Read More

Registration is underway for The Family YMCA’s Half Marathon & Festive 5K set for 9 a.m., Dec. 8.
The event is a YMCA fundraiser in support of youth programs.

Wrecked Paint Truck Removed From Mountain

The truck left the highway Sept. 18 and landed 200-300 yards down a steep rugged cliff into Bandelier National Monument property. The driver of the semi was able to escape the mangled wreck and crawl partially up the cliff, according to a witness at the scene. Santa Fe Institute Elects New Chair
Michael Mauboussin, Chief Investment Strategist for Legg Mason Capital Management, has been elected chairman of the Santa Fe Institute’s Board of Trustees.
His three-year appointment began Nov. 4 and he replaces Jim Rutt, who served as chairman since 2009.
Mauboussin has been an active member of SFI’s Board since 2000 and of SFI’s Business Network since 1998.
He has contributed extensively to the Network’s activities as a speaker, panel member and co-organizer of Network Topical Meetings and Symposia.

Kelvin Doe, 15, is an engineering whiz living in Sierra Leone who scours trash bins for spare parts, which he uses to build batteries, generators and transmitters.
Completely self-taught, Doe has created his own radio station where he broadcasts news and plays music under the moniker, DJ Focus.
Doe became the youngest person in history to be invited to the “Visiting Practitioner’s Program” at MIT.

Unique Holiday Shopping Available Now at Fuller Lodge Art Center’s Affordable Arts Sale

It is not the usual scene at the Fuller Lodge Art Center. When walking into the space, there is no definite show being displayed in the gallery.
What visitors are greeted with is the Affordable Arts Sale, a treat that only comes once a year.
The space has been cleared and filled with every type of art available. There isn’t a corner or niche in the place that isn’t displaying a piece of jewelry, a painted pottery bowl, a watercolor painting or other pieces of art.

Young Girl Remains Hospitalized Following Wednesday’s Crash
Staff Report
The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office reports that the 13-year-old girl injured in Wednesday’s head-on collision near the White Rock “Y” on N.M. 4 remains hospitalized in Albuquerque.
The two-car accident sent both drivers to the hospital and left a 14-year-old Los Alamos boy dead.
An online report by the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office reports that the boy, who has not been named, was pronounced dead at about 5:20 p.m. Wednesday at the scene.
