Valles Caldera’s 2013 Recreation Program Highlights

Thirteen years ago, July 25, 2000, President Bill Clinton signed the Valles Caldera Preservation Act, which created the Valles Caldera National Preserve.

To celebrate that occasion and the many accomplishments of past and present staff, volunteers and contributors, we will host the second annual Valles Caldera Preservation Act Celebration from July 25-28. A new addition to this year’s celebration will be the Jemez Valley Storytellers Jamboree July 27-28. Storytellers from across New Mexico will gather to share their tall tales and legends from the Land of Enchantment. Read More

The M.A.D. Hatters, consisting of Los Alamos native Dan Nebel on horn, violinist Michael Allerheiligen, and pianist Angela Steiner will present a free lunch time concert at noon in Fuller Lodge Thursday, May 16. 

The Hatters will present Johannes Brahms’ celebrated Trio in E flat Op. 40, a trio by nineteenth century hornist of Opera Paris Frederic Nicholas Duvernoy, and the Walden Trio by New York City-based jazz saxophonist Daniel Schnyder.  Read More

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) today announced the creation of the Office of Program Review and Analysis (PR&A) to serve as an independent broker of strategic information and analysis across NNSA’s programs.

Effective immediately, and in concert with the New Mexico Forestry Division, Los Alamos County is under Stage I Fire Restrictions.

The following acts are prohibited until further notice:

  • Building, maintaining, attending or using an open fire, campfire, charcoal or wood stove on all Los Alamos County lands. (See Exemption 1 below)

I want to congratulate Nancy Wurden on her excellent review in the Los Alamos Daily Post of the Beethoven, Symphony No. 9 concert Sunday at Duane Smith Auditorium.

She described the event beautifully. It was a grand performance. The four vocalists were indeed a lovely blend. Perhaps because of the rewrite for winds only, I heard sounds and melodies that I have not picked out before in listening to this symphony.

Massing of the Colors Ceremony Saturday

SANTA FEHonoring Old Glory and those who have served to protect her are once again the focus of this year’s 18 annual Massing of the Colors Flag Day Ceremony in Santa Fe, which will be celebrated May 11 at the Santa Fe Veterans’ Memorial.

Los Alamos resident Bill Gaskill died Jan. 22, 2013 and a memorial to celebrate his life with family and friends is set for Saturday, May 18.

The memorial will be 12:30 p.m. at the Pajarito Ski Lodge. The Los Alamos National Laboratory, Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Rotary Club and Pajarito Mountain were the places he enjoyed the most.
