Los Alamos County is continuing its market research to assess demand and interest in broadband services, as well as explore preferences regarding methods of financing the Community Broadband Network (CBN) project and willingness to pay for the various costs to install and operate the network.
CBN is a “last-mile” fiber network that will provide open and advanced broadband communications access to all County residents, businesses and institutions.

Los Alamos County residents can get their damaged County trash or recycling roll cart repaired free of charge.
Does your trash or recycling roll cart have a broken lid? A bum wheel? Is the body cracked?

The Pajarito Environmental Education Center’s Summer Outdoor Adventure Programs consist of two weeks of day programs for students entering 4-6th grades, one week for students entering 7-8th grades, and now, a four-day overnight survival skills camp for adults and families with children 12 or older.

Pajarito Mountain Re-opens Saturday!

The community is invited to Pajarito Mountain Saturday, Feb. 2 as it re-opens for skiing.
Significant snowfall from the recent storm has resulted in very good snow conditions on the mountain, so lift operations will resume with Beginner, Aspen and Mother lifts on Saturday.
All facilities, including the Cafe, Rental Shop and Snowsports School will be open as well.

Letter to the Editor: Consultants Must Love It Around Here!
By Jerry FlemingI read the other day that there is a serious shortfall in county receipts, and that now county management is scrambling to cut expenditures in order to avoid a serious deficit situation.

Join Los Amigos de Valles Caldera on a two-mile guided snowshoe hike of Cerro la Jara at the Valles Calder Preserve. The hike will take place 10 a.m – noon, President’s Day, Feb. 18.
The group will meet at the Valle Grande Staging Area for registration, snowshoe rentals, and hot refreshments. Arrive as early as 9 a.m. to secure snowshoes, as equipment is limited.
Adult rentals are $15 and youth rentals are $10. The cost is $20 for Los Amigos members and $25 for non-members. The fee includes full-day trail permit.

The popular Pajarito Mountain Beer and Band is back! The next event will be held noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Pajarito Mountain Ski Area.
The beer will be offered by the Santa Fe Brewing Company and from 3-5 p.m., the Squash Blossom Boys from Albuquerque will provide the music.

Aspen Art Teacher Receives LAPSF Grant

Britt Williams, art teacher at Aspen Elementary School, received a Great Ideas Grant from the Los Alamos Public Schools Foundation.
Williams’ grant will impact 55 6th grade students. The students will learn about the Empty Bowls events from Gillian Sutton.
Then, they will learn about clay process, see examples from other artists and do the preliminary sketches of their bowls.
After constructing their bowls using slabs and forms, the students can add texture to their bowls or build up features on the bowl’s surface.

Benjamin David (Ben) Whitmore, age 32, died unexpectedly at his home in Albuquerque Jan. 18, 2013.
Ben was born in Bozeman, Mont., July 18, 1980. He attended public school in Bozeman and Los Alamos, N.M. He graduated from Los Alamos High School in 1999 and attended UNM receiving bachelors degrees in Biology and Chemistry and an associate degree in Applied Science in Applied Technologies.
He had worked as a technician at Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute.
